Ideas can be worth their weight in gold, but unless you have the ability to create the functional product on your own, you are probably going to need some help. This is the situation I found myself in when I was working up some new technology to implement in my own firm. A friend suggested that I contact a product design organization to get some assistance. Not really knowing what the position entailed, I skeptically contacted a popular company and got production underway. Industrial design is something that I knew very little about when I was setting out to implement my strategy. Sure, I had all of the details worked out regarding how it would help me, but I couldn’t foresee the tasks that were associated with actually creating the product to operate on an efficient and functional level. Ultimately, the decision proved to be the right one as the fees of the design team were far less than the amount of capital I saved in the concept’s implementation. If you have an incredible idea and are not sure how to actually create the physical or conceptual design, you should find a product designer that can help your idea become a reality. Understanding Function and Form A great industrial designer should first do their best to articulate how “function” and “form” come into play for the entire project. By establishing what you need the product to do and how it will do it, a professional in the field can discuss the various ideas that they may have in making a product “work”. Their expertise in the field can be a valuable asset moving forward. Generating Prototypes Just about any device we use in our daily lives went through the product design process. From the moment an idea is created, sketches and design ideas are delivered, as the designer begins searching for the various ways to make the technology possible. Prototypes and testing ensue, giving the creator the ability to see their concept take shape, and because there may be several ways to create the physical product, this process can ultimately lead to the most efficient model possible. 3D CAD technology can help an industrial designer create a “rotatable” image of the product for the client to see. This can help the mental picture of how the end-result will look, feel, and operate. Finding the Right Collaborator Industrial designers have specializations like anyone else, and because some may be stronger in certain fields than others, you will want to spend a bit of time researching your options before settling on the right individual for the project. Many will have listings of previous projects, and if you cannot immediately locate them on their corporate or individual website, simply request the information. Finding the right collaborative personality is imperative to the success of your concept. Be sure to match up a product designer who has experience in similar projects to your own. The right industrial designer can be the difference between a successful launch and an idea that simply “fizzles”. Because experts must be involved regardless of the specifics of the project, using outside organizations that can help you create and implement your concept is a must! When you narrow down the candidates and begin pitching your idea, remember that “non-disclosure” information is very important, as it will ensure that your idea remains your intellectual property. Moving forward, you will have done everything within your power to facilitate a successful creative experience, and because your idea may help your company and several others, there may be a very lucrative future for the both of you.

I needed some product designers to help me make my product market ready. So I used the service of some great industrial designers.
