Asthma is a Greek word refers to breathless or breathes from an open mouth. Asthma is the disorder that causes the airway of the lungs to swelland narrow leading to wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing. Asthma is the chronic disease worldwide. It is the disease in which your airways are inflamed, making it difficult to air carry in and out of the lungs. Asthma is said to be the most common chronic disease worldwide. Asthma can occur at any age. Evidently, asthma is commonly found among children and is the cause of hospitalization. In half the cases the onset is before 10 years of age. Based in facts and figures, about 3% of the population of every country is found to be affected from asthma.

According to the study of world health organization, in the year 20004; 57,000 deaths were attributed to asthma and was the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. 5%-10% of the kids suffering from mild asthma go on to develop severe asthma later in life. Although, asthma can not be cure but measures and prevention can be taken for the clinical episode by proper management. Environmental exposure at a very early age, airway obstruction with genetic susceptibility, are factors leading to asthma in children. As seen in the studies, the asthma range from 2.1%- 16.2% when the asthmatic patient has a family history. There is a strong correlation between the diagnose of asthma and family history. Asthma is not fully described by the single gene. Applying, gene segregation models to the data, a major gene which could be found involved in the allergy was found to exist.

Smokers and allergens have a high risk factor of asthma. Bronchial hyper-responsiveness is increased when a person with sensitive skin is exposed to allergens which in turn related to occurrence of late asthmatic response. In number of surveys, smoking has been related to airway hyper-responsiveness. The risk is stronger on the elderly and those with the greater exposure to smoking. Children who are exposed to tobacco are more likely to be an asthmatic. However, smoking adults does not lead to any greater risk of developing asthma.

Leading and the common symptoms of asthma are;

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing or whistling noise on the chest
  • Getting shortness of breath
  • A tight feeling in the chest

Asthma is not yet curable, but it can be well controlled to an extent

  • Modern drugs and inhaler has enabled the people a normal and healthy life. Right treatment at the right time is necessary and is proved to be beneficial.
  • As soon as you suspect the symptoms of asthma, without any delay consult your doctor for the correct treatment. For instance, your doctor can recommend for the triggers; the thing that can bother the airway and the lung.
  • Medicine should be taken on time, exactly as prescribed the doctor. Delay in the medicine can lead to delay in the treatment.
  • Your doctor might even tell you “what to do in an emergency”
  • Ask doctors about your queries and read onto empower yourself. Asthmatic patient must be aware and should know what triggers to avoid, the advantage of triggers over inhalers, and what should be done at the time of emergency.

Intake of medicines, inhalers on time and as per the doctor’s guidance can prevent the chances of attack. But in case of the emergency, following steps should be followed.

  • First of all stay calm and relaxed. Do not lie down sit upright. Cloths should be loosened and relative or friend must help in all the best possible ways they can
  • Without a do, you should take the reliever medicine recommended by the doctor.
  • If there is no relief within 5 minutes take additional doses advised by the doctor.
  • If the problem still persists, call your doctor or see to the doctor. Always remember do not take the overdose of medicines.
  • In an emergency go to the nearest doctor rather waiting for the doctor to come.


If you are an asthmatic, remember this is not the end. Science has widened up so much that if it can not be cured than it be controlled by many possible ways.
