- Silver amalgam fillings. Stout and sturdy, silver amalgam is the same as gold fillings, except that it has a more appealing price tag. One big disadvantage is that they are not the most aesthetically-pleasing options. Some patients might be turned off by its appearance.
- Ceramic fillings. These fillings are usually made from porcelain. Ceramic fillings and strong and easily match the rest of the teeth, but they can cause some amount of wear and tear to the surrounding teeth. This happens if the porcelain becomes too rough.
- Glass ionomers. Although not very common, this acrylic and glass filling is a good option for children with developing teeth because they only last an average of five years. Also, glass ionomers can release fluoride for a healthier smile.
