The face is a complex structure composed of several layers of tissues and muscles, bones, and fat covered by a layer of skin. The aim of face lift surgery or rhytidectomy is to lift and tighten facial skin to reduce overhanging folds and creases. It also aims to relocate and tighten facial muscles that have stretched and drooped, and to remove excessive fat deposits in the area. There are different kinds of face lifts, each designed to address specific issues.

Overview of Facelift Types

The issues associated with facial sagging and aging are usually noticed in people reaching their mid-thirties or forties. The plastic surgeon suggests the suitable face lift procedure depending on the nature and extent of the problem. For most lifts, incisions begin in the temporal hairline and are therefore not noticeable. However, some scarring is inevitable. A skilled surgeon can minimize these effects.

  • Skin-only lift: This lift is meant for the lower face and neck and requires less extensive dissection. Just the skin and the fatty layers are lifted off the muscle.
  • Dual plane lift: This surgery is suitable for elevation of the neck skin and heavy cheeks. SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) muscle is elevated and lifted with the skin.
  • Composite lift: Besides addressing the usual issues, a composite facelift also seeks to correct drooping lower eyelids and aging in the central and lower part of the face.
  • Midfacial lift: The procedure is meant for the area directly beneath the eyes and aims at tightening sagging cheeks.
  • Subperiosteal lift: This lift remodels and lifts the soft tissues of the upper face and offers lasting effects for people of all age groups.
  • Short scar face lift or mini face lift: Meant for individuals who are just beginning to experience facial sagging, this simple procedure is also called an S-lift. A small incision is made at each ear to re-position the tissues beneath the skin. Recovery is quick.

Will a Face Lift Work for You?

Whether you are considering a simple lower face lift or a more complex procedure, it would work for you only if you are in good health, do not smoke and have realistic expectations about the outcome. The surgery is not a panacea for aging, but it can rejuvenate your face and make you look much younger. In some cases, additional treatments such as filler injections or Botox may be necessary to achieve your goals.

If you want to ensure quality, lasting results, get your surgery performed by a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon. A good surgeon would discuss the different kinds of face lifts and help you decide on the right one. The use of advanced techniques and the physician’s artistic ability go a long way in assuring superior results.
