Some women consistently misread or miss the signs that a man is interested. Failing to respond may cause him to lose interest. Responding too quickly or too intensely can scare him away.
Even if he’s seen you before, “interested” seeing is different. You may notice him looking at you, but if you look back, he looks away. Eventually, though your eyes will meet. A quick smile will encourage him without scaring him away. Watch for him to return the smile.
You’ll need to pay close attention to catch the next sign. You may notice him pointing you out to one or more of his friends. There are three general reasons for that. First is to get the friend’s approval for his choice. Second is to try to learn more about you. Finally, he may be working up the courage to approach you.
He may also get to know one or more of your friends. You may feel a little jealous that he’s paying attention to your friend. Try not to show any jealousy. One the one hand, a display of jealousy will most likely drive him away. On the other hand, if your friend is the competitive type, she may feel challenged to grab him for herself.
If you have mutual friends, he may try to set up an introduction or an “accidental” meeting. The friend might ask you leading questions or even tell you outright that “someone” is interested.
If he approaches you directly, he may act nervous or clumsy. If he hasn’t learned much about you, he may make awkward small talk. His hair will be freshly combed, and he may be enveloped in a cloud of his favorite cologne. His grooming will be impeccable, and he may be slightly overdressed for the occasion. He may seem a little self-conscious, and will be on his best behavior.
Conversation will proceed from small talk to storytelling. He will tell you humorous and adventurous tales from his past. If you’re at a restaurant, he may over-tip. All of these behaviors are designed to impress you. He will listen intently to what you say.
Finally, he will seek opportunities to physically show off for you. He might invite you to watch his weekly football game with “the guys” or even climb a tree or throw a Frisbee for the dog. Showing off is a classic indication of serious interest.
In the early stages of a relationship, both parties often try to adapt to the other to create a better “fit.” While it’s perfectly okay to try new things to see if they’re interesting, it’s dishonest to pretend to be interested when you’re not. Eventually, the truth will come out. He’ll learn you don’t like football that well, and you’ll realize he hates your cat. A solid, mature relationship can handle truth, so don’t mislead on the important things.
