In whatever Job or endeavor a person takes may it be a writer, educator, translator - when there is a success, there also will always be challenges coming along.
In the translation industry alone, there is no exception. Challenges exist in any forms and ways. One of which that is very tricky and challenging is to know yourself as a translator.
Why? It’s who and what you are as a professional. If just speak German fluently doesn’t mean that you can claim yourself as an accredited German translator. So you have to map out and determine such things as, what exactly your vision is, Do you want to offer just translation or you plan to have interpretation along or both, what language combination will you apply, what certain field do you prefer i.e. legal, marketing, financial, medical, and technical?
This initial challenge should better prepare you for the potential customers out there choosing your services. From that standing point, you then now ask what makes you stand out in this highly competitive market?
So the next challenge for you is how to keep yourself competent in this line of work. Many translators feel too comfortable on the level they are at and often mistaken by the knowledge that spending time translating alone is more than enough to ensure their skills are maintained at an appropriate level of quality.
Which in fact is very wrong; that is why translators, should spend ample amount of time, to review and check the before and after translation, researching of information, speaking or if not practicing their languages, compiling of glossaries, looking out for dictionaries, following training courses in their fields of expertise, despite of their personal level of competence. In this way, you as a competent translator are up for maximum guarantee to your clients and 100 % dedicated to your work.
Another challenge a translator come face to face with includes isolation and loneliness. Translators tend to work by themselves and work in their own which results to the two mentioned above. To avoid such situation and to boost once competence in the translation industry, try to affiliate yourself with certain associations and join workshops, trainings and seminars which comprises the fun part since events like these bring in people from different cultures, and getting to meet with any of them at some gatherings that are language related is definitely one of the highlights in this profession.
In relation with isolation and loneliness, working at home results to such since you get to miss the buzzes created in an office setting together with the social interaction that goes with it as well as the journey of going to and fro from home to office and vice versa.
Although working from home is a dream by many, it creates its own dose of problems enough to create great challenges. Aside from the effects of social separation it suggests being lazy and getting too comfortable wasting ample amount of your precious working time on whatever reason which results to rushing, half hazard output and low quality of work.
We don’t want to endanger our career do we? So better be ready and organize yourself on getting in for the job. Always instill in your head being alert in every obstacle that awaits you and always keep your faith in whatever task you do from whoever client you encounter.
