When it comes to pregnancy, there is no higher priority than the health of the mother and that of her baby. Maintaining their health depends on getting the proper medical care at each stage of pregnancy. Some healthcare providers recommend different types of care for different patients and there are also different types of ultrasounds to monitor the development of your child. So how can you know which is the correct one to undergo at your particular stage of pregnancy? Here we will briefly outline the information that each kind of procedure provides and the process of the procedures themselves to help the new mother be an informed patient. The number of ultrasounds that you will undergo will vary during pregnancy. Many healthy pregnancies can be carried through with no ultrasounds whatsoever. However if parents wish to know the sex of the child or if they wish to closely monitor the development, then ultrasounds can be the answer. Concerns of the doctors might also lead to ultrasounds to acquire such information as placenta position, gestational age, or child heart health. Doctors use ultrasounds primarily when they are concerned with abnormalities during the pregnancy. They can be taken safely at any point during the pregnancy. The most basic ultrasound involves placing a gel onto the abdomen and then using an instrument to bounce sound waves off of the tissue and bone to generate the foetus images. There are absolutely no health risks in the basic procedure. There are many types of ultrasounds that are all based on this simple principle and used to gather more specific forms of information. Using computer software, doctors can now provide three dimensional images of the developing foetus. It is also now possible to perform Doppler pre natal scans which measure the change in frequency of the sound waves in order to monitor blood cells. Transvaginal scans are also available at the early stages of pregnancy and inserted through the vagina. There are other types of pre natal scans available to monitor other aspects of foetus development as well. Public healthcare providers may not deem all of these tests necessary during a healthy pregnancy. However, the conscientious mother may wish to contact an independent practitioner that will perform a private ultrasound scan. These doctors generally have the capabilities to provide any type of private ultrasound scan that is available in a publicly supported hospital. Whether this be something along the lines of an Echocardiography or any other common procedure, as a mother, you can never be too careful. It is important to emphasize that all of these procedures cause no harm to the baby or mother as long as all procedures are performed by a licensed sonographer.
