What Can Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Technology Do For Us

With the improvement of medical standards, a large number of previously considered incurable diseases have been cured with new drugs or, reply on advanced surgeries. Many biologists study various diseases and help humans to overcome a variety of medical difficulties. Recently, a relatively new cell technology named induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) is worthy of attention. What is the mechanism of iPSC technology? Basically, it is the induction of stem cells through artificially complex processes. Stem cells are commonly found in all multicellular organisms and have excellent self-renewal and differentiation capabilities. Focusing on their unique and remarkable properties, stem cells are converted into any type in adults, such as skin cells, brain cells, and blood cells. In addition, stem cells can be used as the body's repair system to heal specific diseased or damaged tissues in adults. Theoretically, it is possible to obtain any desired cells in the body by inducing stem cells. Even more exaggeratedly, the "Human Cloning" in sci-fi movies is achievable. However, Human Cloning technology is not feasible in the real world. And the misuse of iPSC technology will cause serious uncontrollable consequences. Instead, the utility and efficacy of iPSC technology have been reflected in the aspects of disease modeling, transplant replacement therapy, drug discovery, development, etc., which opens up many portals for therapeutic research and does beneficial things for humans. In general, induced pluripotent stem cells provide in vitro models of disease that help to reproduce the development process of disease, and study the pathogenesis of disease. The technology has also been applied in regenerative medicine, where iPSC has grown to replace damaged, diseased, or aging organ tissue. Furthermore, different from classic embryonic stem cell technology and somatic cell nuclear transfer technology, iPSC technology does not use embryonic cells or egg cells, thus no ethical issue arises. On the other hand, iPSC technology helps create proprietary stem cells in patients' bodies, and therefore no problem with immune rejection. It is well known that iPSC technology plays an important role in the research and development of human medicine. In order to induce stem cells into the desired pluripotent cells and obtain the expected iPSC, attention must be paid to the morphology of stem cells. The morphology of iPSC presents different states of change during the culture process, and the observed process changes are of great significance to the following steps. Notably, several aspects need to be focused on the culture process, such as the growth of the iPSC, the pluripotency of iPSC (mainly include some pluripotency-related transcription factors), genetic/karyotype analysis of iPSC, etc. The application of iPSC morphology assists people to explore more and provides the most cost-effective and fastest way to monitor iPSC growth changes during culturing. At the beginning of relatively new technological developments, many theoretical and technical problems need to be proved and resolved through experiments, and these discoveries will lay the foundation stone for the medical career.
