In your effort to set realistic SEO Expectations for your business, you need to find out just what SEO can and cannot do for you. Here are a few thoughts to consider: * Don’t get your keywords and rankings confused with your business goal. SEO doesn’t run a business, but it certainly helps smooth the way. To have the aim of top rankings in Google as your goal is not a goal at all, just a step towards a goal. You need serious planning and both long and short term goals with regard to your products as well as how to sell them. Not the best SEO strategy in the world is going to sell bad products, poorly presented. * Page Rankings should be seen as the result of good relevant site exposure and not the cause of it. A high page ranking won’t give you an increase in traffic and conversions, but good traffic and conversions will probably give you a good ranking. It is possible to get so many random clicks on your site that you get a high ranking but your keywords were misleading and you get few conversions. * Your SEO keywords must be relevant. You don’t want to target clicks that don’t sell products because the traffic came to the wrong site by accident when they were looking for something quite different. * Inbound links are important. They are like ‘word of mouth’ in a real life store. They should come from sites that complement your products, rather than direct competitors. Many people find it worth while to submit their link to online directories. These directories have categories of topics and you need to pick out those that are relevant to your own products or services. * Your main object with SEO [and indeed, all online strategies] should be to make your site, your product, more visible. Your whole aim should be to drive the right sort of business traffic that is most likely to convert into sales to your website. * As the internet gets bigger and more complicated and much, much more competitive, so this becomes more difficult. You cannot expect everything positive to happen overnight. It takes time. * There are basically two ways you can go about this. You can educate yourself and go for it alone. You must expect a long learning curve. It can be done, and indeed, it has been done, but be prepared for a lot of trial and error, and much perseverance. This kind of effort is not always practical if you have your actual business to run and perhaps products to manufacture or buy. * The other way is to approach an SEO expert, or firm of experts. They have their fingers on the pulse of internet marketing and are up to date with the latest strategies. They also have a wide knowledge base usually of several experts who can brain storm new solutions. * Most SEO firms will be prepared to advise you or even take over the job of building up your website to make it more professional and user friendly. They have built up a knowledge that you may never have of what online potential customers are really looking for and what puts them off and chases them away. * It stands to reason that with professional online backing you are going to have far quicker results. Most good SEO companies have a repertoire of satisfied customers for you to investigate. Most also cater for small one-man, single website businesses right up to mega corporations with multiple websites.

One of the main problems we see with people starting with an seo service is that they do not have realistic expectations. It should be the job of an seo consultant to help form real targets and goals.
