Feeling tired, sluggish and if the life has been drained out of you? Are you reaching for you third cup of coffee, at 9am? Do you wish you had more energy to enjoy life and are not just surviving it? If this is a description of your life, now it is time for a change! But, what can be the cause of low energy? Nutrition and Vitamins • Low iron levels: Iron, a major component of haemoglobin, is essential for energy production and is critical for transporting oxygen in blood and muscles. Most anaemic people (people without enough iron) tend to be extremely tired and weak and it can also cause headaches. • Zinc: This helps the body with the synthesis of proteins and DNA. It also heals wounds faster and improves immune responses. If you have a shortage of zinc in your body you will likely have a lower energy level too, so check with your physician if your zinc levels are normal. • Magnesium: Magnesium plays a critical role in energy production. This is needed for over 300 reactions in the body. The areas there this is most metabolically active are the brain, kidneys, brain and liver because of the high magnesium concentration of the tissues. • Essential fats: You need to have approximately three servings of fatty fish each week, or take in fish oils supplements in order to get sufficient levels of omega-3 fats, DHA and EPA, in your body. Essential fatty acids have many different functions in your body, one of which is to fight fatigue. A study done among 633 breast cancer survivors showed that omega -3 fats can significantly reduce fatigue. • Low Coenzyme Q10: This energy-producing powerhouse is present in every plant and animal cell. If you have a heart disease or if you are on cholesterol medication, you may be lacking this vital nutrient. • Chronic bowel issues: When you suffer from constipations, diarrhoea or irritable bowel on a regular basis, you energy levels can be drained. To ensure that you have a healthy bowel function, consume probiotics and dietary fibre – it can make a world of difference in your daily energy levels. Hormonal Issues • Low testosterone levels: The hormone levels the body needs to be in balance at all times. Low levels of testosterone can produce symptoms of fatigue, which is why you need to have your physician check to see if your T levels are in check, especially if you get older. • Adrenal hormones: Stressed out? Chances are that the adrenals, that provide the hormones for the “fight and flight” response, are working overtime. This leads to the releasing of more and more hormones and can lead to adrenal fatigue, which, can result in weight gain, exhaustion and insomnia. Low energy levels are common in so many men, but luckily there might be a simple answer to this problem. Make sure that your diet and hormone levels are in check, and ensure that you get daily exercise as this can make a huge difference to your vitality.
