What Do You See When You Look in the Mirror?

When I was at a recent retreat I participated in an intense process and spent some time sharing a painful experience I had and my own limiting beliefs about myself. One of the wise women from the circle shared her very profound observation:

"I think when we all look in the mirror we see a Picasso."

Just let that statement hang in the air and resonate with you for a moment. It is profound and beautiful on so many levels.

Picasso’s work is some of the most famous art in the world. His works of cubism are known for their beauty by those who gaze upon them. Yet those same works might be considered odd or ugly because they do not look like they are "supposed to" look. Forms are split up into different shapes. These shapes are juxtaposed in a unique way to become something new. This captivating uniqueness and what might be considered a flaw by someone wanting a picture that looks a certain way is at the heart of what makes it so beautiful.

So consider... when you look at yourself in the mirror do you see the beauty of the Picasso or the flaws? Do you feel your radiance shine forth from the reflection before you or do you recoil at what you believe is "wrong" or somehow "not enough"?

Did you know that while you are staring in the mirror seeing and believing only faults, others are out here just dying to see you? Those you are meant to be in relationship with are seeing you as the beautiful Picasso, not the faulty version. However, until you can bring your lens into alignment and see the beautiful Picasso as well, you will always be holding yourself back and keeping others at arms length.

I know this is true because I have experienced it personally. I have seen the contrast between holding onto my pain and taking down the armor so others can see me; between trying to fit in and letting go of it all so I can allow myself to be who I really am. Outside the limiting story is an unspeakable degree of freedom.

Take a moment and ask:
* Do I protect myself with a suit of armor and keep others at a distance?
* Am I more committed to the story I tell myself or what might be possible for me?
* Am I willing to explore a new way of relating to myself?

If you answered yes to any of the questions, now is the time to take that first bold step toward changing the lens through which you see yourself and your life.
