When you go to fill up your 4L at a gas station, today you have the choice between 2, 3 or even 4 different fuels … it's not always easy to navigate! SP98, SP95-E5, SP95-E10, E85… The choice is all the more complex depending on the service stations where you are going to stop and depending on the countries you are going to cross during the raid , the fuel you use habit will not always be available. So what gasoline can I put in my 4L depending on my engine? Do I have to add the additive? Is it serious if I refuel with a different gasoline than the one I normally use (95-E10 instead of 98-E5 for example)? I answer all these questions here! Junk Car Kings What gasoline should I put in my 4L ? Reminder of fuels available at service stationsrnLet's start with a quick reminder of the different fuels offered in service stations since 2019. Unleaded 95-E5 . It is a so-called “unleaded” gasoline, with an octane number of 95 and containing approximately 5% ethanol. Unleaded 95-E10 : same as for SP95-E10, except that it contains 10% ethanol. Unleaded 98-E5 : as for 95, it is unleaded gasoline, but with an octane number of 98. 98 always contains 5% ethanol (98-E10 does not exist). E85 ethanol : as its name suggests, it is a so-called “green” fuel composed of 85% ethanol. The problem of ethanol present in all fuelsrnFirst observation : ALL the fuels offered today in service stations contain ethanol, in more or less significant proportions. So you cannot escape it. Ethanol poses a number of compatibility problems with our old cars: Ethanol changes the engine's stoichiometric ratio . Clearly, to obtain optimal combustion of the air / fuel mixture, you will need a larger quantity of ethanol than gasoline for the same quantity of air. The carburettors of our 4L being designed to work with gasoline, ethanol will come (in theory) to disrupt the functioning of the carburetion and therefore of the engine.rnEthanol is more corrosive and less lubricating than gasoline . When it is present in large quantities in the fuel, ethanol does very poorly with all the rubber elements that it encounters in its path: the fuel hoses of course, but also the membranes of our gasoline pumps and certain accelerator pumps in our carburetors. It could also have compatibility issues with certain carburetor alloys.rnAs you will have understood, the objective is therefore to opt for fuels with the least possible ethanol in their composition. Thus, when we have the choice, we will avoid Ethanol E85 and to a lesser extent, SP95-E10. SP95 or SP98 ? If you have followed correctly, we have, ideally, two fuels of choice : the SP95-E5 and the SP98 . So which one to use for our 4Ls? Well, it depends!
