Dentists around the world are shunning their old methods and continuously adopting new ones. Most of them have become customer friendly. They have graduated from a service-based model to a customer-based model. This has become especially important since apart from general dentistry, fields like cosmetic and implant dentistry have also evolved a lot. Having all three disciplines under one roof ensures that a customer receives holistic consultation and care. Everyone dreads going to the dentist since they have been demonized as people who cause pain every time you visit them. However, visiting a dentist regularly is an integral part of a complete and effective dental care regime. Hence, it is advised that you don’t skip this aspect of your dental hygiene. No amount of brushing or flossing can compensate for a visit to the dentist. A visit to the dentist isn’t just about fixing ailments related to your teeth. It is about prevention. A regular visit to the dentist ensures that small problems don’t grow exponentially to cause bigger health problems. In this segment we will highlight what happens if you put off going to the dentist. 1. Accumulation of plaque Brushing and flossing is done to keep plaque accumulation under control. Plaque is basically a mixture of bacteria and food particles that has the potential to adhere to the teeth. Brushing and flossing can prevent plaque accumulation to a great extent, but they aren’t foolproof. Even after brushing and flossing there is some plaque left around your teeth. This accumulated plaque can grow over time. Worse still, the bacteria can start secreting substances which can damage and erode the enamel. When you visit a dentist, he or she does a thorough cleaning and removes any plaque left around your teeth. This ensures that your teeth stay in the pink of health. 2. Tooth Decay The accumulation of plaque and bacteria in the teeth despite brushing and flossing is dangerous. Over time, these bacteria will secrete substances which will erode your enamel and damage your teeth. They will survive within the plaque and grow colonies using small leftover particles of the food that you eat. Eventually this bacteria and plaque will cause tooth decay. Tooth decay can necessitate removal of teeth or their replacement. Tooth decay often involves surgical intervention which costs money and causes pain. All of this can be avoided if you visit your dentist regularly, who will check to make sure your teeth are clean and will clean them if they are not. 3. Stains Drinking stuff like coffee, tea and wine can cause staining of the teeth which makes them look unattractive. Moreover, these stains can become deep and dark over time. If you visit a dentist regularly, he or she will perform a thorough cleaning using professional tools. This will remove the stains and keep your teeth whiter for longer. 4. Gum diseases Untreated tooth decay and plaque accumulation can cause a host of gum diseases like Gingivitis which entails the swelling and bleeding of gums. This allows the bacteria to settle within the gum leading to further periodontal disease. A regular visit to the dentist can ensure that you are able to avoid gum diseases altogether.rnAs evident from the aforementioned points, investing time and finances into regular dental check-ups is a good way to avoid future dental health problems. It is imperative that you visit your dentist periodically to keep your teeth healthy and give them the all-around care that they deserve. Many modern clinics like Drescher & Cohen DDS offer a host of services under one roof.
