V&V Energy - visibility and vulnerability. What do I mean when I personally talk about visibility and vulnerability? V&V Energy is the willingness to be seen for who you really are. There's a TED Talk that was given by Brene Brown, who's a PhD psychologist and an author (who I discovered before Oprah did – just sayin’!) and in that TED talk she said that the power of vulnerability is to feel that “I am alive”. I so appreciated that. She started researching connection in humans, but through interviewing so many people, she learned a lot about disconnection in the process. She found that the #1 destroyer of connection in human relationships was the energy and emotion of shame. According to Brene Brown she says, shame is the fear of disconnection. “Is there something about me that if other people know it or see it, that I won't be worthy of connection?” Then she says, however, in order for connection to happen, we have to allow ourselves to be seen. This means that we need to be vulnerable. Then she goes on in her talk to say that we live in a vulnerable world, and one of the ways we deal with it is we numb our vulnerability. This is so true – especially for those of us who are highly sensitive entrepreneurs. She says that we, as a culture, are the most in debt, obese, addicted and medicated adult cohorts in US history. Ouch. Yikes! And I have a sense that bold statement can be applied to most countries of Western influence. She also went on in her talk to explain why this is: you cannot selectively numb emotion; you can't say here's shame, here's fear, here's disappointment, so I am going to put these emotions over here but I still feel all the things I want to feel. It doesn't work that way. She said if we're honest with ourselves, in order to numb our unpleasant emotions, it numbs ALL emotions. You can't numb those hard feelings without numbing the other effects. When we numb those things we don't want to feel, we also numb our joy, we numb our gratitude, and we numb our possibilities. And to me, that's a HUGE ouch! She says we're miserable. We're looking for purpose and meaning, and then we feel vulnerable so we go back to numbing. It's a dangerous cycle and truly powerful to understand. She opens her TED talk - which I do recommend watching, by the way – and says that the real juice or joy in life will come not through searching but through the willingness to be vulnerable. Why is this important when it comes to business? I think even on an intellectual level we can all understand that it's very difficult to be in business if you're not willing to be seen. If you're not willing to be seen, it's very difficult for other people to find you and if other people can't find you, then you can't be of service. And if you can't be of service, then you can't generate money through your business. On top of not having money, on top of not having clients, you would also be experiencing the choice to numb this beautiful, gorgeous, amazing life that you have been given which includes the incredible gifts you possess as an HSE.
