It is seen that Drug and alcohol addiction do not fit neatly into a box. Just as the individuals struggling with them are unique, so unique are it’s situations. Because of this, a variety of treatment options persist but not every treatment method is completely right for every person. There are many options that exist to treat substance use and addiction; however, you need to keep in mind the more you begin to explore and understand your options, the better are the chances of choosing the treatment that is best for you and the higher is the likelihood that you find success. Within addiction medicine, fortunately for people certain guidelines exist to help individuals and their families and their care providers in finding the type but also the level of care that serves best to their needs. This is especially pertinent concern when an individual is detoxing or withdrawing from drugs and alcoholWhat Is Detox? Though many understand the term but not everyone does fully understand the process. When a person gets addicted to either drugs or alcohol, the substance brings about such a chemical force on their body and brain, thus changing the way the person’s brain functions. Specifically, a person’s brain experiences a profusion of chemical alterations within its important system. Our brains does contain chemical substances called neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that are responsible for carrying messages across the brain, so that the important functions that are important for your balance and health are properly carried out. The problem arises when the brain starts responding to addictive substances in a way that is quite similar to how it reacts to these naturally occurring chemical messengers within your brain. Basically, our braingetstricked—as drugs or alcohol stimulate and change the production and function of these critical neurotransmitters, the brain begins to believe that it no longer needs to produce its own. As the brain’s communication and reward systems are compromised by this switch, your brain begins to rely on the constant influx of chemicals that the compulsive drug-seeking behavior of addiction offers, in order to maintain these balances. When the addictive substance is suddenly removed from the body, your brain struggles to function in the absence of the drug. If this is something that happens very quickly, in the case where a person quits suddenly or “cold-turkey,” they will likely start to exhibit symptoms of withdrawal. The extent of this withdrawal is dependent on several factors that includes, if the person quits at an instance, or tapered their dosage; the duration of usage of addictive substances, how much of the addictive substance that they were using, if they were concurrently using any other addictive substances, the general state of their physical and mental health, and numerous other factors that may vary per individual. Detox happens in several steps and best occurs under the guidance of a trained professionals. How Do You Determine What Sort Of Detox Care You Need? How much detox care is needed completely depends on the severity of withdrawal. Not every person experiencing alcohol or drug withdrawal needs the same level of support. Certain substances, such as alcohol can hit a person to such an extent that can lead to death. On the other hand, others substances like cocaine’s exit from the system is so quick, because of it’s chemical nature that detox is quicker. It has been strongly recommended that you never go for detox on your own without medical supervision, as it can lead to dangerous consequences in the capacity that it could endanger your life. Seeking medical supervision is very important so that your drug detoxification can be planned accordingly and monitored to ensure the best and safest outcome. There are people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol have experienced withdrawal symptoms before as they may have attempted it on their own or even experienced detox within a program. Despite these experiences that they had before, it is still important to seek medical guidance, as certain factors within your life may have changed, leading to nuances that could influence the outcome. In order to ensure that you find the most optimal setting for detox, you need to be very honest with your treatment provider or rehab treatment specialist, so that they can properly advise you. To aid in this process, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) have created a set of criteria to help determine your need.
