Digital rights management is effectively an advanced access control mechanism that limits the usage of digital media and devices. Some big companies like Apple Inc, Microsoft and Sony use this technology to enforce their intellectual property rights. You will also find that many music publishers have incorporated DRM protection into their files to restrict individuals from playing music on players that do not enforce their DRM controls. DRM is normally used in conjunction with a licensing control system to restrict usage to only authorized computers in order to prevent the sharing of DRM-protected content. Some DRM protection systems use password security to prevent unauthorized access to protected content. However, it is easy to break this type of system either by using password recovery (cracking) tools or by sharing the password with others. Other more advanced DRM systems use public key technology and licensing servers to ensure decryption keys are never made visible to the user. DRM software protects intellectual property from being stolen by securing documents against unauthorized viewing, coping, modifying, saving and even printing. DRM protection technology is crucial to any company having intellectual property where its revenue streams can be compromised if the data is not secure.  The security provided by DRM software provides a company with complete control over all aspects of their information no matter where the digital content will eventually reside.  Some DRM software also uses the same level of encryption that the U.S. Government uses, hence providing adequate protection for important and confidential digital information. So, what are some of the benefits of using this technology? Many online stores selling digital files, media or otherwise, protect their content by using DRM software. These content providers have been battling for a long time against piracy but with the use of DRM the problem of intellectual property copying has been greatly reduced. Content providers can now concentrate on coming up with new models to enable them to expand their web content and increase their reach and services to their customers (for example providing limited use for a reduced cost). Finally, DRM protection has benefitted consumers because they can now get digital content delivery on their network, PC and portable devices. Previously, before the use of DRM software, many document, ebook and media providers were reluctant to publish their information electronically for fear it would be copied and made available on torrent sites. The use of DRM has helped content publishers reduce piracy whilst expanding their markets, reducing costs, and enabling their customers instant delivery of their content.
