What is Micro-needling? Solvaderm Explains
There are many salon treatments that in recent years have become popular in helping to rejuvenate skin and keep it looking young. From chemical peels which help to remove the dead cells on the epidermis to reveal newer skin beneath, to oxygen lifts using stem cell technology to refresh tired skin, these treatments are minimally invasive and often require no downtime. Micro-needling is one such treatment, but not many people are aware of what it is or how it works. The skincare brand Solvaderm has a professional skincare product range that it distributes to salons which include a micro-needling, or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) device.
How It Works
The CIT device is usually a small roller covered in needles which when applied to the surface of the skin creates tiny punctures. These punctures in turn stimulate the skin’s own healing and repair process through the production of collagen. As collagen is required to keep skin looking young and healthy, this results in new healthy skin developing making micro-needling ideal for treating a variety of conditions ranging from fine lines and wrinkles to scarring and skin pigmentation irregularities. A single session is unlikely to yield results but as few as four sessions can stimulate enough new skin growth to reduce the signs of acne scarring and fine lines.
Does It Hurt?
A topical anaesthetic cream is applied before the treatment takes place, but this is primarily to make the client comfortable. Some redness and tingling tend to follow the procedure, similar to a very mild sunburn, and some peeling as the skin starts to shed. However, this tends to be mild in comparison to some other cosmetic treatments and disappears within a day or two. In fact, one of the benefits of the treatment over, for example, chemical peels, is that it is suitable for delicate and awkward to reach areas such as around the mouth and on the chest. An additional benefit is that topical treatments applied soon after are more effective as they reach further into the epidermis.
How Effective Is It?
The effectiveness of the treatment obviously depends to an extent on the area being treated and the number of treatments received, with fine lines responding the best and burn scars slower to heal. It is recommended that a minimum of six weeks be left between treatments to allow for the production of new collagen but on average 4 to 6 sessions with a maintenance visit once every six months is ideal for treating fine lines and wrinkles. For the treatment of scars or particularly damaged areas, the newer devices which are designed as pens with needles at the tip can be more suitable. They are also excellent for treating hard to reach areas on the face such as hyperpigmentation on the nose or fine lines around the mouth.
There are some home micro-needling devices available, but Solvaderm would recommend treatment by a professional to get the best results.
