The most common tool to determine the count of the heart beat is through pulse rate and in order to determine the pulse rate, doctors use pulse oximeter. It is a medical device that indirectly monitors the oxygen saturation in the blood. Pulse oximeter also provides vital sign monitoring usually operated in the hospitals. An Oximeter is widely used for measuring blood oxygenation because it is non-intrusive since the medics are not required to measure oxygen saturation directly through a blood sample of a patient. An oximeter is usually suitable to the standard percentage of oxygen and also primarily utilized in the hospitals because it serves several important functions for them. Pulse oximeter is often attached to a monitor so that the staff can see the patient’s oxygen level at all times. In an oximeter, a pair of light emitting diodes makes up the sensing when the arterial walls expand and contract as the heart beats; one diode emits a red light while the other emits an infrared light. When the diodes send pulses of light, it shows whether the blood is oxygenated or deoxygenated. However, pulse oximeter only measures the oxygen levels paying no attention to the skin tissues. It also makes use of fixed ratio in order to determine the blood oxygen saturation which is the percentage of oxygen in a patient’s hemoglobin. Aside from measuring the pulse rate in the human body, oximeters also measures the strength of the heart beat via its more advanced feature Perfusion Index. Historically, oximeter devices are used only in hospitals but as technology developed, there are also a lot of portable, battery operated oximeter devices for home. These newly created devices have the same functionality and accuracy as those oximeter devices before, the only difference is their portability. The machines before were large and not easily transported but now they are small and extremely lightweight which is generally designed for patients who wanted to measure their pulse rate and oxygen saturation. The essence of these oximeter devices is to provide an easy and convenient way for patients who need regular monitoring and if they notice an abnormal reading they can immediately call their doctors to diagnose their abnormality and further recommend solutions to avoid more complication and worsening of the situation. Pulse oximeter devices are generally helpful not only for the patients to monitor their pulse rate at home but also for those patients during surgery, intensive care, and recovery since they provide a constant stream of data and information for the medical staffs and personnel. Indeed, oximeter devices are very useful in different situations.
