Before we get into sports physiotherapy, we need to understand what the profession really stands for. Physiotherapy, or physical therapy, is a type of treatment that helps improve mobility, motor function, and overall physical fitness for people suffering from different types of health issues that affect movement and recovery. Stroke victims, people recovering from a surgery, injured soldiers, car crash victims, and sports athletes will require the services of a physiotherapist in the recovery process. There is a wide array of specialties when it comes to physical therapy, from orthopedic physiotherapy, which diagnoses, manages, as well as treats issues regarding the musculoskeletal system; to neurological physiotherapy and geriatric physical therapy, which deals with the various problems that senior citizens normally face as their body becomes more and more fragile as they age. And if old people get to have their own physiotherapist, infants, toddlers, and adolescents also have a physical therapist they can count on for specific health and mobility problems. Pediatric physical therapists can diagnose, manage and treat children with disabilities and other physical challenges. While geriatric and pediatric physiotherapy focuses on patients in a certain age demographic, sports physiotherapy specializes on athletes and sports enthusiasts. It helps prevent, evaluate, treat, rehabilitate, and enhance the performance of an individual involved in sports and athletics. Physical therapy in sports can help improve a sportsperson’s performance and reduces his chances of getting serious career-ending injuries. And if injury does occur, which is quite common in this field, a physiotherapist can help remedy and maximize the recovery rate of the injured athlete. To help prevent serious and debilitating injuries, a physical therapist specializing in the field of sports may recommend specific equipment to his client for a speedy yet healthy recovery. Various fitness programs may also be given to specific athletes to help minimize potential injuries and enhance their overall performance. A sports physical therapist should have more than enough know-how when it comes to assessing active injuries and other chronic issues. This is because, more often than not, he or she has to make accurate evaluations regarding surgical and non-surgical neurological and musculoskeletal injuries. A sports physiotherapist’s task includes proper assessment of the patient in a post-injury or recovery stage, and aids in their safe return to their respective sport. Apart from helping clients to recover successfully, a sports physical therapist is also capable of boosting or enhancing an athlete’s overall performance. Athletes in various types of sports will require varying fitness programs and performance enhancing techniques. A good physiotherapist knows this. But before a physical therapist will recommend a specific program, he has to have a thorough evaluation of the client’s musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiovascular systems, so he can determine which aspects the individual needs to improve on. Physiotherapists who are adept in these fields are quite valuable in the sports physical therapy industry. In retrospect, the changes in the evaluation process, treatments, and rehabilitation techniques closely corresponds to the advancement in research and development of the basic and clinical sciences of the human neurological, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular systems. Sports physiotherapists are just part of a team of researchers who will aid athletes in reaching their full potential and becoming the best in their respective sports.
