The Highway Code states that cyclists ‘must wear protective gear at all times.’ While this might sound counterproductive, it is probably the most lifesaving piece of advice you could ever hope to follow. By wearing something as simple as a helmet or a protective vest, you could potentially avoid having to make cycling injury claims.

Helmets

Helmets serve the function of protecting the skull and brain. If you get knocked over by a car or truck, a good helmet could prevent catastrophic injury. Below are two well-known helmet brands which are worth investing in:

Hexr

Hexr Helmets are unlike any other, as they are 3D-printed helmets which are custom-moulded to fit the rider’s head. In fact, they are the ‘first custom helmet’ ever, and have been designed with aerodynamics in mind as the shell is sculpted to be seven seconds faster than the average helmet! No wonder they were the official helmet of the 2012 Olympics…

Bontrager Wavecell

These helmets are ideal for mountain bikers. They are designed to be easy to slip on and off, and the strap underneath is both secure and easy to free in the event of an accident.

Body armour

When you hear the word ‘armour’, you might think of heavy plate armour which is worn by knights, but you can get padded armour made for cyclists. Something like a Troy Lee protective shirt will add some extra protection to your chest and upper arms while leaving your forearms free to breathe. Wearing heavy armour might seem counterintuitive, but if you find yourself falling off your bike and onto hard ground, the padding will absorb the shock and prevent broken bones.

Reflective gear

Never forget that it is better to be seen too soon, than too late. Reflective vests are always a good investment. You need between 100-500 lumens in the front and 100-200 in the rear. When purchasing a jacket or a vest, the investment you make could have significant consequences. Make sure to spend decent money (around £80 or more) when looking for a vest. Lights, however, are a more efficient way to achieve the lumen count. Make sure you get powerful lights and affix them to the front and rear of your bike.

Movement is one of the most honest forms of self-connection. The body never lies. It holds stress, records emotion, and reveals when something feels off. True healing often begins in the slow, intentional kind, the kind that lets the body lead and the mind follow.rnThat’s where precision-based training, such as re
