The world is in utter distress today, and if the young generation grows up to bring good relief and peace in this world, what an incredible achievement that would be, isn’t it?! But while we are hoping the young generation to reach out to the world to make it a better place to live in, the statistics from across the board are confirming and reconfirming the fact that the burden of depression among Indian students is rising at a very high pace indeed. How can a depressed person bring cheer to anyone, leave aside the world? And the main reason behind the rise of depression among Indian students boils down to : the tremendous pressure to achieve whole lot of things together. rnThe average high school kid / college student today goes through enormous level of stress and anxiety, trying to combat with the: •pressure to complete regular homework, various worksheets, assigned projects, etc. •pressure of exams after exams at school / college, •pressure to get good grades academically, •pressure to indulge in multiple extracurricular activities, •pressure to perform well in competitive exams, •pressure to secure admission in the promising line, •pressure to run through a tight and overly-packed daily schedule, •pressure of non-acceptance by society of any educational setback in life, •pressure from parents to fulfil the dreams that they could not fulfil in their life, •pressure of over-expectations of parents, •pressure from peers to keep up with the pace for latest games, movies, mobiles, gadgets,… This not only affects the students’ sleep and nutrition, but it also rules out the option to play and enjoy any outdoor games without pressure. This stress in turn interferes with their ability to learn, concentrate, memorize, and above all, develop as a normal, healthy, happy and bold human being. Dealing with expectations from parents: The parents today are going overboard, wanting their child to become the superstar, ‘My child should do this, my child should do that, my child should know this, and my child should even know this, my child should be an expert in all of these.’ It is good to encourage the child into developing multiple skills, but provided, the child has the potential and the aspiration for it. rnFor students, rather than getting depressed, try to discuss with your parents openly and with a clear mind, if you find your aspirations clashing with your parent’s expectations. And if not, then take things positively for when there are expectations from us, it serves as a very big motivation to work harder and smarter to meet the expectations of our loved ones, and make them happy.rnVersatile: There is unnecessary burden of competition amongst students. Studies are essential, but there is so much more to life, worth exploring and engaging in, simultaneously. So, as parents, give your child a balanced growth by encouraging him / her to be versatile in life. And as a student, it is for you to take up the initiative to grow into a happy human being. For instance, •have an earnest attitude to develop an obliging nature, and be of help to people around you. •cook some healthy recipes for your family, and help them overcome unhealthy eating habits. •play outdoor games, practice yoga and meditation, watch family programmes and play with them indoors. This keeps us connected with Nature, with the world, and with our family too! •read good books that inspire bright thoughts and instil positive thinking in us. •make good resolutions that inculcate ‘normality’ in every aspect of life. •at this tender age, have an aptitude for spirituality. Spiritual knowledge nurtures right understanding in us and helps us progress on the right path in life. With spirituality, we remain grounded and we can overcome all our fears and cope up with any situation in life!
