Affiliate marketing is one of those industries that anyone can jump into and make money with. Because of this, a great many people get started with high hopes, only to find that things aren’t working the way they naïvely expected them to. This industry has one of the highest early-failure rates of any business. But does it need to be this way?
Too many newbie-affiliates just dive right in to a poorly selected niche, trying to sell some arbitrarily selected product without any idea how to intelligently address the needs of their market or how to discuss what the product has to offer to meet those needs. Without a good idea of what works, what doesn’t work, and what types of tactics can actually hurt an affiliate-marketing campaign, many beginners find nothing but frustration and disappointment when they try to earn the kinds of commissions the really successful affiliates describe.
It’s important to come to understand the role of the affiliate-marketer, and the relationship affiliates have with vendors and consumers alike. Anyone can cut-and-paste some HTML and fill a website with affiliate-links, but simply doing this won’t guarantee any positive results. A big mistake many new-affiliates make is underestimating the intelligence of the online-consumer – and nothing has a greater damaging-effect than insulting someone you’re trying to sell to!
Successful affiliates play a valuable role in online commerce. They’re the ones who provide content to consumers that help them make the right purchase decisions, not exploit and manipulate them into simply giving up their money.
On top of that, a good understanding of the technology behind a successful affiliate-marketing campaign is essential. Spammers are actually shooting themselves in the foot as they pollute the internet with unpleasantly aggressive sales appeals, and of course, these activities are rightly penalized by the various service-providers being exploited this way!
The ideal affiliate marketer understands the role he/she plays in helping consumers make the right purchase-decisions, and based on this understanding, develops a naturally-trusted online presence. The most important thing for an affiliate to do is to relate properly to the needs and desire of their prospects – providing content that has the effect of satisfying their audience and leaving a lasting, positive impression.
Consumers don’t want to simply waste their money on something they don’t want or need, they want to make informed purchases, and they want to end up glad of the decision they made. An affiliate who promotes product A because it has a higher price than product B, but fails to investigate what either product offers to the consumer will have a much harder time promoting Product A to people who would likely be much better off benefiting from what Product-B provides. Understanding the products you’re promoting, really standing behind them, knowing what the ideal customer wants/needs and being able to reach them convincingly on those grounds is the only way to properly fulfill the intended role of an affiliate. Trying to manipulate consumers into making bad purchase-decisions and abandoning them not only results in the failure of your campaign-efforts, it leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouths of consumers who might have otherwise found themselves grateful to the affiliate who helped them find the product that served their purposes best.
