Your goals will determine the online marketing strategy that you should use, and there are several approaches that can be used which are basic and effective if you want to use your website to generate revenue. An effective marketing strategy will depend on the approach you take. If your website is used to convey your brand or image then the service provided is where you actually generate revenue.
Business professionals including accountants, physicians, and lawyers will normally have this type of website. For this type of website you should include your qualifications and professional history, details on how you can be contacted, the services that you offer, and other relevant content. For some professionals creating this type of website without help is possible but it is not advised. Your professional image depends on your website, so you want it done in a professional and effective manner.
A web designer is a better choice if this type of website is what you are looking for rather than a programmer, and the designer should be knowledgeable in the design features which will attract visitors to your website and convey a professional business image. Color scheme, font, and other features will impact the image visitors have of your professional abilities, and a good web designer will understand this. If the goal is just to project your professional image then it is not as important to help visitors find your website, because this will be accomplished with a business card or other method.

If the goal is to attract leads using your website then you will need a different strategy to accomplish this. Your website will need to be effective, and have a good ranking with the search engines so your website can be found. You will also need to get your company existence out there to any potential customers, so that they start looking for you. There are four ways that you can achieve this goal, and each has specific benefits and drawbacks:
- On Site SEO- On site SEO requires a significant investment of time, money, or both of these. If you choose to do the SEO yourself time will be needed to learn this subject and perform the needed tasks. If you hire out your SEO then you will need to pay money for these services. This method is limited in the benefits you will see in your website ranking with Google though.
- Off Site SEO- This method includes link building and generation that creates inbound links to your website from other websites. Viral marketing and other techniques are used to attract inbound links to your website, and most professional SEO companies will provide this service if needed.
- Social Media Campaigns- Social media campaigns can include exposure on Twitter and Facebook, but also forum posts on subjects you understand well, YouTube videos, and other social media efforts.
- Advertising- Advertising can help you spread the word about your company. Google AdWords is one advertising option that is low cost and can provide results. There are many other advertising programs and opportunities that can be used as well to increase your company exposure and inform potential customers that you exist.
