Buying a grill is like getting into a relationship. It is an investment and, in a curious way, a commitment. It would be unwise to take home the first one that catches your eye. It takes serious evaluation. Most of the time, listening to what others say leads you to an irrevocably regrettable choice. Like relationships, you need to figure out who you are, what you need and how much you can dish out.
The first thing to be considered is your lifestyle. Are you the type who waits for grilling season? Or do you enjoy homemade grilled food all year round? Also, the location and availability of space in your home are also crucial in determining which type of grill to purchase. For example, grills located in houses near the beach take on rust more quickly than others. As grills in the market are usually made of mixed-grade stainless steel, buy the 300-series as it develops rusts more slowly than the 400-series.
Next is the food that you will cook. Hotdogs and hamburgers are the top types of food that usually find their way onto the grill. However, if you are one of those people who also love to cook big cuts of meat, or whole turkeys and other fowl, a grill that comes with a rotisserie is the one for you.
The third question you must ask yourself is how much you can afford to spend. A basic grill obviously costs less, and comes in a variety of models that will be able to do the work impressively. Nowadays, some grills have added features that virtually incorporate functions of other kitchen gadgets. Aside from more burners, there are models that boast of a space for condiments and even cold storage! If you are aiming for a grill with special features and more accessories like these, chances are, it also comes with a steep price.
On a more technical note, you must know that the burners and the grate are the most important parts of the grill, especially the gas grill. It is highly recommended that you purchase a grill that offers options to control heat, or what is also known as “zones of cooking”.
The rule of thumb on grates, on the other hand, is this: the heavier, the better. This is because heavier grates heat up more quickly and is able to maintain heat, thus preventing food from sticking.
Once inside the store, there are simple tests that you can do to ensure that the grill is safe for your family’s use. To prevent accidental burns, the handle grip should allow enough space so that no part of your hands will get in contact with the lid. Also, check whether the grill is stable by pushing it in different directions and angles. If it tips, it’s imbalanced and therefore unsafe. Furthermore, burners and the grilling surface should have enough space between them; this helps lessen flare-ups due to oil drips.
