Just like choosing your own doctor, a great deal of time and energy should be dedicated toward choosing the right veterinarian for your pet. Not only do you want to find someone experienced and knowledgeable, but you want someone that both you and your pet can trust. There are several key factors you should consider when trying to choose a new veterinarian to help take care of your pet.

Experience

The first consideration to make when choosing the right veterinarian is experience. You want to find someone who is knowledgeable and has worked with your particular pet, or breed of pet before. Someone with years of experience will not only be familiar with different medical cases and conditions, but will be well seasoned, able to tackle anything. Experience can come in many forms. Sometimes veterinarians have worked in an emergency facility, or have extensive schooling. Other veterinarians may have years of experience working at their own practice. Whatever it may be, make sure that the experience of your veterinarian matches your own individual needs.

Communication

Communication is key when it comes time to choose a veterinarian. As much as we would like to think they can talk, unfortunately, our pets cannot tell us what is wrong. That is why we rely on a professional veterinarian to decipher what is happening when our pet is sick or injured. When selecting a veterinarian you want to make sure you find someone who has excellent communication skills. They should be able to speak with you in a way that makes it easy to understand what is going on with your pet. Further, they should be approachable and available for questions or concerns. Make sure you find a veterinarian that follows up with you and regularly checks in with your pet to ensure your pet is doing well.

Approach

Easily the most important aspect when choosing a veterinarian is to make sure you agree with the vet's approach to tackling medical issues. Some veterinarians take the "wait and see" approach, while others choose fast action. Some veterinarians are more inclined toward aggressive treatment, while others are geared toward natural or noninvasive approaches. Still other veterinarians are happy to offer a range of solutions to a problem or medical concern, presenting different options which allows you to choose what you think is right. There is no right or wrong way, but the approach should align with your own beliefs. Make sure that your veterinarian walks you through the pros and cons of each approach in a well thought out and thorough manner. Be sure to talk to your veterinarian ahead of time to find out which way they favor in order to make sure the approach matches your comfort level and what you believe is right for your pet.

The Basics

Of course, you need to make sure the basic logistics are in place after you have chosen the right veterinarian for you. Try to find a veterinarian's office that is close to home so that you can easily make it to your vet in the event of an emergency. Regular wellness checks and visits will be easier if you only have a short distance to travel. You will also want to find a veterinarian's office that has office hours, or possibly weekend appointments that can work around your busy schedule. Make sure that your veterinarian you choose isn't so busy that you cannot get an appointment when you need one. Lastly, you should make sure that the cost of your veterinarian is within your price range, ensuring that you will be able to afford taking your pet to the vet's office.
