Most people don't know what to expect when getting braces for the first time. Some people may have braces in their youth, and return in adulthood to get them again if maintenance efforts weren't followed. Some of the inconveniences that people experience may differ from youth to adult, but there are some pretty standard experiences that everyone should be aware of.

When It Comes To Orthodontics - You Have Choices

Don't think that orthodontics work is a one-size fits all approach. There are options for you if braces aren't appealing. Depending on the line of work you are in, or how confident you are in yourself, you may prefer an alternative to braces. When we look at the website of an Orthodontist in Oklahoma City, you will notice that there are other options available to you. Some of those options include.

  • Traditional Metal Braces
  • Clear Aligners
  • Tooth-Colored Braces

These options are available for patients of all ages. These treatment options work for anyone trying to get straight teeth, they are affordable and highly recommended by orthodontists around the country. Adults that have career requirements that put them face to face with clients on a daily basis may prefer a less-permanent solution that can be worn at night after work. Many children desire the same type of orthodontic treatment, some prefer not to have traditional metal braces for the duration of their junior high and high school years. Sometimes problems can arise during treatment, understanding common problems with ortho treatment will help keep your timeline on course. Others don't mind and where their metal-mouth smiles with pride. No matter your preference, if you have teeth that need to be straightened there is an orthodontic treatment for you.

Every Orthodontic Treatment Is Unique To The Patient

Like we said earlier, there aren't one-size fits all approaches to orthodontics. Mouth shapes are different, tooth size, diet, and oral care are all things that can impact the timeline for braces or straighter teeth. For most patients, the timeline for orthodontics work is anywhere from 1-3 years, this should help you understand what orthodontics can do for you. This differs for everyone though and you should consult with your orthodontist about the timeline for treatment, especially if you are trying to have the treatment completed by a certain date.

Understanding The Orthodontics Treatment Process

After the consultation process, the actual treatment process is a pretty simple deal. You will have your initial consultation, followed by x-rays, and then the submission of a treatment plan. That plan should give you a good indication of the timeline required to complete treatment. After all that is done, you should have your braces or aligners ready to go. From consultation to having an actual appliance in your mouth should only take about 3 weeks to happen. If it takes longer than that it might be because of complications in the mouth like cavities or gum disease that may need to be treated before the straightening work can be done.

What Can You Eat When Wearing Braces?

This is often asked, and it may be obvious to some and not so obvious to others. Sticky candy, sodas, and anything high in sugar content should be avoided. Consuming large amounts of sugars while wearing braces can leave you vulnerable to cavities and other problems. Avoid sugars as much as possible. Stay away from hard to chew foods including but not limited to fruits, candies, cookies, meats, chips, ice, and other similar foods.

Your Ortho Experience Won't Be A Pain-Free One

If you are having braces put on, you should know that there will be times where you will feel major discomfort. The tightening of the braces can cause headaches, and pain relief medication will be necessary. Even clear aligners and retainers can cause enough tension in the mouth to create migraines. As the teeth move and are pressured into moving into their new location, the tooth and gums can become sore and become agitated. This pain can last several days until the teeth begin to settle into their new location.

Expect To Wear A Retainer For Some Time After Treatment

After your treatment ends, you will most likely be required to wear a retainer or some form of a mouth guard. Permanent bars may be glued to the interior of your mouth and may remain there for the duration of your life. This will help prevent your teeth from shifting back into their original position.

Relax And Let The Process Work For You

The process and timeline can really drag out if the experience isn't a pleasant one. Understanding what it's gonna take, and having those expectations in place before you begin will help you deal with it. When you start this process you are going to know it's going to take you 1-3 years, so mentally preparing for that will help you get through it. Stay positive, know that your orthodontics work is only temporary, and the rest will come easy for you. Trust in the process, trust your orthodontist, stay up on your maintenance, pay attention to your eating habits, and the rest will take care of itself.

Regardless of your chosen orthodontic treatment, step by step tooth movement isn’t going to happen overnight. So it’s important to remain positive, stick to the guidelines as laid down by your orthodontist and above all, you need to have patience. Remember to trust in both the process and your orthodontics team, and you will have straighter teeth that you can be proud of.
