A look at the various techniques and processes used by psychologists We can become mentally unwrapped or injured in much the same way that we can become physically wounded. The stigma of seeking professional counsel has all but faded away; in today’s world, it seems like nearly everyone has a therapist. Therapists have even become prerequisite for many of Hollywood’s celebrities and VIP’s. But what is it that a psychologist does for their patients exactly? It’s a psychologist’s job to give their patients a level headed assessment of their current condition(s) and offer them the best options for treatment and recovery. It’s impossible for someone to fully characterize themselves, as we are unable to step out of the first person perspective. Professional psychologists can help a person to reason out their difficulties in ways that they probably haven’t even considered. There’s no need to get nervous about meeting with a psychologist, they are only trying to help you manage any difficulties that you may be facing. Most psychologists are very conscious of the manner in which they present themselves. They will often go to great lengths to ensure that their patients are comfortable, be treated with respect and without judgment. rnFirst Encounter During your first encounter, a psychologist will begin to assess the current issue at hand. Once everyone is comfortable, the information gathering process can begin. This usually includes both background information and first hand observation. Once all the pertinent information has been collected, your psychologist will provide you with feedback and the next few steps to move forward. Along with your feedback, they will also discuss the treatment options that exist for your condition and work with you to come up with an agreeable solution. During this time it may also be necessary for you to ask your psychologist about any other concerns you may have. Additional sessions will focus on specific problems and/or the effectiveness of the ongoing treatment. The therapy is intended to help patient understand, manage, and change unwanted thoughts and actions. We increasingly emphasize helping the individual gain employment. These are short-term interventions designed to help people manage and overcome pre-vocational barriers, whether physical, psychological or social. Your sessions will continue on until both you and your psychologists feel that your concerns have been resolved. You may have to explore multiple treatment methods before you arrive at a solution (don’t get discouraged and give up half-way, stick to it unless you feel that it isn’t working for you).rnManaging Life’s Curve Balls Life is dynamic and ever-changing; nearly everything is inconstant flux. No matter how well prepared you think you are for something, you can never anticipate what the future holds. Sessions with a psychologist might be exactly what you need to turn things around or cope with a difficult set of circumstances. It’s just like they say, “A stitch in times saves nine.” Don’t let things wildly escalate or build up to a breaking point, get professional help and face your problems head on.
