A condition that is common for both men and women is that of an ingrown toenail. This occurs when a corner or side of a toenail begins to grow into that toe. It is known to normally affect the big toes, and if it is not treated quickly it can lead to acute pain, swelling, and even an infection. Infections occur rapidly if the toenail breaks the skin and bacteria is allowed to seep in. In some cases, the skin of the toe will begin to grow over the ingrown portion.

Most people with this condition will take care of it without the aid of a physician. Soaking your foot in warm water and trimming your toenails on a regular basis can alleviate the issue; however, seeking the advice and care of a podiatrist at Town Center Foot Clinic is ideally your best option. You should do so at the first signs of pain or pressure. If your pain is severe or you notice that it is spreading, our podiatrist can relieve this discomfort and help you to avoid more painful complications. If you suffer from diabetes or another condition that is related to poor foot circulation, it is advised to come straight into the clinic.

There are several reasons why you may be prone to ingrown toenails, some of which are inherited. For example, you may have toenails that are too large for your nail beds. If your toenails have a natural tendency to curl under, then you are prone to this, as well. If you stub your toe or experience some other form of foot trauma, this can also make you susceptible to an ingrown toenail. For women, wearing high heels can also cause this problem. This is due to the constant push of your body down on your feet, forcing your entire body weight down on your toes. This will often lead to foot deformation over a period of time and can also lead to your toes becoming ingrown. The most common cause, however, of ingrown toenails is improper trimming which causes the toenail to regrow into the skin of the toe. If you wear tight pantyhose or narrow shoes it will only make matters worse.

There is something you can do about ingrown toenails. If you leave them untreated, it can lead to a serious infection. If you do not have diabetes and your symptoms are minor, there are at home remedies that you can try. Wearing sandals or open toed shoes can help alleviate the symptoms of this issue. Lower healed shoes can also help. Keep your feet clean and dry as much as possible. Always use toenail clippers and never finge
ail clippers, as this is one of the main causes of not trimming correctly. Also, always cut your toenails straight across; never round the corners and do not cut your toenails too short.

If there is, however, an infection, it is time to come into our clinic to see the podiatrist. He or she can decipher if you need oral or topical antibiotics and whether or not the toenail needs to be removed.
