When someone says “I’m studying to be a nurse” you usually think of the local hospital. Huge, gleaming, squeaky clean places where the doctors all dress in scrubs and lab coats and nurses all wear white. And since nurses are in demand, they usually make pretty good money as well. But there are places where nurses are in extremely high demand, where the compensation can be incredible, and the impact you can have as a nurse can make the difference between life and death.

When you think about working as a nurse overseas, you may be thinking of Africa, India or some other exotic location where health care is at a minimum and conditions are rough. You’d probably be right. Those locations and the people there are lucky to get any health care. Being a nurse in those conditions means you are really providing a service that people desperately need.

You also may be going into a war zone like Afghanistan or some other area where civilians are in desperate need of medical attention. While military medics may be available to help, the onus of helping the civilian communities affected by attacks falls to others, and local medical help is rarely sufficient. Outside nurses from the various organizations like Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross have to fill the gaps. And nurses are in dire need there as well.

Let’s face it. These conditions are not the best in the world by any stretch. Working in disease ravaged communities and in war zones isn’t the safest place to be, but the impact a nurse has on the lives of those they help is incalculable. Not only will you have to work with too little equipment and too few supplies, but you’ll have to think outside the box on a daily basis to help as many people as possible.

The compensation is exceptional as well. The pay is great as not only will you usually get a base salary that far outstrips standard nursing salaries but hazard pay as well. This means even a few years spent as a nurse working overseas can provide you with an income that will enable you to live well for a long time to come. And the grateful people who you help may well be compensation enough. Nursing jobs overseas are in high demand, and the rewards are well worth the risks.
