Believe it or not, homeowners still hide their cash in places that most people realize are poor hiding places because they have been overused. Burglars are not stupid. Well, they might be stupid for breaking into your house, particularly if you have a home security system installed, but they aren’t stupid when it comes to knowing where to look for your things. Here are some places where you should never hide your cash or other valuables because burglars know right where to look. 1. Never hide your spare key under a fake rock. This is the oldest trick in the book and any burglar who has been around the block a time or two can spot a fake rock a mile away. You should also not hide one under your doormat, in or under a flowerpot or anywhere on the frame of the door itself. 2. Do not place valuables or cash in your freezer. This is one of the first places burglars will look since it has been popularized on television shows and other media formats. You should also skip the diversion safes as well, since burglars know to look for fake jars, cleaners and other household items. 3. Do not hide your cash or valuables in your underwear or sock drawer. For some reason, these drawers are very popular hiding places. However, burglars know this and will make a beeline toward these drawers as soon as they get inside. 4. Do not hide anything under your mattress. This is the most common hiding place in the house and no burglar will skip looking there. It’s better if you do not hide any of your belongings under the mattress, even those adult magazines you are hiding from your kids. 5. Do not leave your valuables or cash out in the open. This might seem obvious, but homeowners get a little lax about their security, especially if they have home security system installed, but if you leave your cash, credit cards, keys and other valuables in plain sight, you might as well have just handed them to the burglar yourself. The best place to hide your valuables is in a safe. It seems intuitive, but homeowners often think a save is too obvious. Of course, a safe is obvious, but it’s there to serve a specific purpose, which is to keep your cash and valuables secure. Just make sure you get a safe that burglars can’t simply carry out of your house.
