Antivirus Software Costs
The cost of the software is naturally important. You can spend a great deal on computer virus protection and still not be completely safe. On the contrary, there are some very good free anti virus programs available that provide more than adequate protection. Whether you choose shareware, freeware or purchase licensed software, your choice should be based on several key factors.
Frequent Updates
Computer virus protection is worthless if it is not updated regularly. Hackers and others are constantly updating the viruses and spyware they make. Code keeps getting more complicated and harder to detect. If the antivirus programs you re relying on are not updated frequently, your computer is still vulnerable to attack. The best programs notify you of available updates and automatically download them to your system.
A Suite of Tools
Today’s antivirus software is really more complex than protecting against just viruses. Any program or group of programs you utilize should provide several types of protection coverage: antivirus protection, malware protection and a firewall.
A firewall is a group of programs that protects a computer or network from outside users from other networks. It examines each packet of information sent to the computer before sending it through to its destination. Sometimes it looks at the domain name or the Internet Protocol address to ensure the source is acceptable.
Malware is short for malicious software. The types of software found in this group are often designed to be disruptive to your system’s operation or to gather sensitive information from that computer without the owner’s consent. Some types of malware include Trojan horses, spyware, adware worms and others.
A computer virus is a program that can replicate itself and spread to other computers over the Internet or through a network. Viruses use a number of strategies to infect computes and the methods change continually.
Source of Antivirus Software
Many new computers come factory-equipped with antivirus software that is functional only during an initial trial period of 30 to 90 days. This gives you the opportunity to test the software. After that, you need to purchase the software through a subscription. Some companies allow antivirus downloads after paying a fee. With a few clicks of the mouse, you can download the protection you need and operate safely within the limitless confines of the Internet. Other software can be purchased and installed from discs to your hard drive. Usually these require that you log into the company’s website to activate the program and to set up a schedule for regular updates.
