Insecurity is one of the worst feelings one could ever experience. We always try to create secure environments to live and grow in, and constantly keep updating our security arrangements so that we do not find ourselves vulnerable to attacks of any kind, be it physical, mental or emotional. But what part of our being really needs security? Is it our mind, our heart or our soul? Let us explore! In order to understand the true nature of security, it is important to understand the true nature of our own being. What is our truth? Who are we? According to Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, we are really a Pure soul. Our body, mind, heart, thoughts, and all our worldly identities constitute our relative self, our worldly being. In reality, we are a Pure Soul, which is free from birth and death, and not susceptible to any pain and suffering whatsoever. Thus, our Soul, which is our real identity, does not need security because it is not vulnerable to any threats. The body may be harmed, the mind overwhelmed, emotions manipulated, but there is no power in the world which can touch the Soul, our real being. Now let us talk about our heart. The heart is the seat of love. All of our love, compassion, empathy, kindness and the feeling of oneness which we experience with other people, comes from our heart. Now, love cannot exist without trust. Just as a child completely trusts their parents, or a lover trusts their beloved, the heart, which is the seat and source of love, has a natural tendency to trust. And where there is trust, there is no insecurity. The heart also has the power and inclination to forgive. Even when someone breaks their trust, a heart full of love will always forgive. Thus, while the heart is susceptible to pain and being hurt, it does need, but does not crave for security because it leads with trust. Next, let’s come to the mind. Now, the mind leads with logic, and is thus ever so observant. It is always alert and vigilant, trying to look for patterns and, more importantly, breaks in patterns. Inconsistency leads to mistrust, which fuels insecurity. This is made worse by the fact that we can never fully know all the facts about any given situation. This propels the mind to infer conclusions, devise strategies to safeguard against potential harm, and basically create a war plan to protect the self at all costs. The mind, being without the freedom of the soul or the love of the heart, guided solely by logic and incomplete data, is the one that is extremely vulnerable and craving for security. Where can the mind find security? What is that knowledge that will put all its fears at ease once and for all? Only the knowledge of the Self - the understanding that we are a Pure Soul - can liberate the mind from insecurity. But this knowledge needs to be lived and experienced in order for it to be effective. And only someone who has done so can show us the way to it. This is where we need a Gnani - someone who has experienced complete freedom from fear and insecurity. The guidance of the Gnani, accepted with utmost humility and complete surrender, indeed has the power to expel all the fear and insecurity, from each and every part of our being, making us abhaya (fearless)!
