Orthognathic surgery is beneficial for those people with misaligned teeth and jaws that lead to an improper bite. The surgery is also effective for those with ‘flat faces.’ Inherited abnormalities in jaw growth and genetic conditions such as cleft lip and palate or hemifacial microsomia usually lead to such issues. Orthognathic jaw surgery is a corrective jaw surgery that involves repositioning of the jaws and bringing about a more harmonious facial appearance. Usually this procedure is provided along with orthodontics to ensure proper positioning of the teeth. Conditions that Can be Corrected This reconstructive surgery can correct issues such as: • Weak chinrn• Protruding chinrn• Difficulty in closing the lips at restrn• Gummy smilern• Flat face Orthognathic jaw surgery -- the Procedure Orthognathic jaw surgery is usually provided by a plastic surgeon, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or an ENT specialist in collaboration with an orthodontist. Orthognathic surgery involves three phases. In the first phase, the teeth are brought into proper position with the help of orthodontic braces in preparation for the surgery. In the case of patients with severe jaw abnormalities, this might require a period of about a year. Once the teeth are correctly positioned, the surgery is performed. Usually provided on an outpatient basis, the surgery requires a few hours to complete. The patient would need around ten days off from work. During the third phase, around two to three months post surgery, the orthodontist would gently manipulate the teeth, if necessary. After this final stage, the braces will be removed. Corrective Jaw Surgery that Ensures both Aesthetic and Functional Benefits Orthognathic surgery can address a range of facial and jaw abnormalities which result from incorrect development of the facial bones and teeth. These abnormalities usually lead to difficulty in chewing, jaw and speech function. The procedure should ideally be undergone at a reputable plastic surgery facility where board certified plastic surgeons offer their services. Before the corrective jaw surgery, the surgeon would plan the procedure in close consultation with an orthodontist. During the initial surgical consultation, the surgeon would carefully examine the patient, and photographs and radiographs would be utilized to decide on an individualized treatment plan for the patient. An advanced plastic surgery center would have the latest in digital imaging technology that would aid in computerized treatment planning for orthognathic surgery. The expected surgical changes to the facial appearance can be viewed and the best course of treatment can be ensured to the patient.
