Why Meditate? This is a good question. What might surprise you is the fact that there isn’t one specific answer. There are many answers on why to meditate and each person will have their own unique reason for starting this practice. But before getting to all the reasons that you should add meditation your daily routine here is an explanation on what exactly meditation is. What is Meditation? Meditation is a mental/spiritual practice. It is called a practice because you always need to be working on it. There are many different styles of meditation and they come from all different areas of the world. Some of these styles are based off of a spiritual practice while some are part of a life philosophy. Each meditation style uses similar methods, but each will have a slightly different reason behind the practice. With some meditation practices you can learn to quiet your mind and listen to a deeper or higher voice. By getting quiet and allowing things to be still, all levels of your life can change and come into balance. Through this process you can lower stress, feel better about yourself and improve your life. Other meditation practices work to help you connect to the Divine, in whatever form you recognize it as. And other forms of meditation work to help you connect to a feeling of oneness with all creatures on the planet. Why Practice Meditation There are many physical and emotional reasons to meditate. Every group that uses meditation as a tool will have their own ways of getting in a meditative state and often different meditation practices to bring about different effects. But overall there are some real benefits no matter what style of meditation you end up practicing. So here are some general benefits for meditation. 1. Meditation can help you to be a better person. No one ever asks why someone who plays the piano why they practice playing the piano, it is obvious. Through meditation you can develop skills and abilities that allow you to be more compassionate, more grounded, and more centered. This helps you to interact with the world from a better place. 2. Meditation can help you to deal better with life’s troubles. People who have a regular meditation practice are able to stay calm in troubled waters. Knowing how to get centered even in the most difficult situation is a still that anyone can benefit form. 3. Meditation can help you be happier. This might sound too good to be true, but studies have shown that people with a regular meditation practice report having happier and more fulfilling lives. Happiness comes when you are able to let go of anger, resentment, and ignorance. A meditative practice helps you to let go of those negative behaviors and cultivate positive ones. 4. Mediation can help to reveal patterns of behavior that keep you stuck. You might not understand why you do the things you do. Much of our human behaviors come from programming that happened when we were kids. By learning where these programs come from you can change the control they have on your life. Benefits of Meditation There are many benefits of meditation. Some of these are mental, some are physical and some are even emotional, but the most important thing meditation will do is help to bring all parts of yourself into alignment. After a time you will see improvement in all areas of your life. Studies have proven that meditation helps to improve overall health. One of the biggest areas where people notice improvement is a decrease in anxiety. Meditation can also lower stress and blood pressure, as well as help with depression. Another surprising side effect of a regular meditation practice is increased concentration. By learning to relax and quiet your mind your brain gets a chance to work in a different way than it normally does. This helps to increase concentration and memory. Meditation can also change the way you deal with the world. If you tend to be high strung and easily flustered meditation can help to give you a calmer demeanor. By calming the mind and taking time out every day to sit in a calm space you can change the way you see the world and start to approach things more calmly.
