Postmaster General Patrick Donahue told the newspaper in an interview that "our situation is extremely serious. If Congress doesn't act, we will default."

A public employer that handles almost 40% of global mail mentioned that the service has been piling up losses since early 2008 due to rising costs and decline in volume caused by rising Internet use and e-commerce.

In July 2011, the service unveiled a plan to close more than 10% of its post offices throughout the United States. It had already slashed 110,000 jobs (this represented 16% of its workforce) in the past 4 years to cut its wage bill.

The Obama administration will try to save the Post Office from default by proposing extra time for a payment.

That's just one true and recent example of how email has so rapidly overtaken the traditional postal mail service. We can logically understand why this is so.

Just take a simple example where you need to send a normal letter to your friend in another part of the world.

The mail may take more than a week to reach its destination. It can be lost too.

With email, the process is much simpler. You just need to turn on the computer and internet connection, write an email and with one click of the mouse, your mail is sent securely within seconds at the comfort of your home or office. And there is practically no postage cost at all.
