Fashion they say is synonymous with passion – being ardent about making oneself better, not just for oneself but for society in general. Women in particular, often turn to fashion for reasons other than just looking their best. They live their lives based on what’s current, new and fresh, thriving on what is considered “forward” and “fierce.” Men have their cars and gadgets, women have fashion. This fashion fascination is something that’s been around since the old days – the days when designers were known as “clothes makers” and supermodels were non-existent. It is believed that fashion has long transcended from being just a way of describing the emergence of new trends in clothes to a way of life. It is the reason that generations are defined by how they dressed and lived because fashion is greatly influenced by factors like the weather and the environment, but more of personal beliefs, experiences and values of a person. There were many times in history when fashion’s influence was so great, it defined a particular era. In Western Europe, the middle class were once prohibited from dressing like royalty to put them in their place. In ancient China, wearing dragon designs were strictly prohibited because they were meant for the emperor’s use only and during World War II in the US, fabric was rationed so much that there were strict regulations regarding the length and yardage of women’s skirts. Read about more fashion trends of old online. Thus, it is no surprise that women and most men follow fashion trends like it was going out of style, no pun intended. Fashionistas, as they are referred to, scour the internet for all the best and latest in fashion, what counts as the best buys or what Hollywood celebrity made the best and worst dressed lists. The latest issues of fashion magazines fly off the shelves faster than you can say “onesies” because well, people just love devouring this stuff. These days, however, what fashionistas are following are those trendy and flashy fashion blogs where everything from pretty to ugly to fugly is posted. When they check out fashion trends here it is with a ferocious desire to be considered “cool” or “in” because as famous supermodel Heidi Klum puts it, “in fashion one day you’re in and the next day you’re out.” Street fashion blogs like Mamamia.com.au are quite simply, online fashion diaries written by real people with real takes on the trends. One doesn’t have to be a top fashion designer or a supermodel to be an expert in fashion and fashion trends. Fashion bloggers themselves are the ones who set the trends everyone follows, the ones who have a firm grip on what looks cool or not, and generally impressive in their demeanor. And get this: around 85% of fashion bloggers are female and have been described as quite fierce. To be a fashion blogger is considered the epitome of cool, not to mention having one of the highest-earning jobs as well. When you read street fashion blogs, you get candidly honest opinions about this seasons trends or the latest red carpet fashion. Light, fun and easy to read, fashion blogs are inspirational in the sense that you learn about fashion and style from real people, ones that you see on the streets everyday and not on the catwalks and runways of Milan or Paris. It makes fashion seem more relatable to the fashionably clueless. Fashion blogging started back in 1978, not online but as a street style column in the New York Times written by Bill Cunningham. But for most fashionistas, the first real blogger was none other than Cher, Alicia Silverstone’s fashion forward character in the iconic movie Clueless, who used Polaroid photographs instead of mirrors to gauge how good she looked. Regardless of how it started, fashion blogging is well on its way to becoming the next glossy – online version. And the new style Bible which many women will consider the gospel truth.
