Why is Air Just Like Great Sex?
The only time most people think about it, is when they’re not getting any!
Cute joke, huh? But it is sadly true. Even though breathing is our most vital connection with life, and almost 80% of people are breathing at only 35% of capacity, most never even give it a thought. Instead they think about the price of gas or the high cost of health care. They pop pills to stave off panic and anxiety, while wondering where the Olympians on TV get all that energy.
Ironically, thinking about your breathing could help you with all of the above (even the sex part), but only if you think about it long enough to correct the errors in programming that are embedded in your personal operating system. But I'm jumping ahead.
Oxygen is the fuel your cells burn to make energy. If you are one of the 80% referred to above, guess what… your cells are starving! They're only getting about 35% of the oxygen they need to create the energy you need to fulfill your potential.
Why do so many people suffer from fatigue, anxiety and panic attacks? Think about how you would feel if you were only getting one meal a day? Pretty anxious, right?
Even if your belly is full of food, if your cells are starved of oxygen, your whole body is still virtually starving! Besides, most foods and beverages consumed these days, actively rob oxygen from the body. But that's another article...
The good news is... oxygen is free for the taking, non-taxable, and there's an abundant supply right under your nose! All you have to do is claim your share.
Okay, so how can you tap into the abundant "well"? The first little secret to getting your share of the free energy is... nn(drum roll please)
Think about it!
That's right... just start thinking about your breathing, right now, and you'll see what I mean. (I'll wait.)
See? It gets bigger when you think about it, right? (If only great sex was so simple!)
Now, here's the rub. You can't possibly focus all your attention on your breathing all day long. And like most of us, you've probably been conditioned to stifle your breathing when feeling stressed. Ironically, this is exactly when you need to breathe most.
How did it all get to be so backwards?
It all has to do with learning to stuff our feelings instead of expressing them. For example, the only way to stop ourselves from crying, as children, is to stop the breath from flowing. We master “choking back our tears” at a very early age.
As adults, the slightest thought or threat that might possibly lead to crying, triggers the breath to become shallow. It happens automatically now. It’s a very fundamental “program” in what I call the “personal operating system”.
Now those poor little cells are really starving, and we go into survival (aka “fight or flight”) mode. With no real threat to fight or flee, however, we end up with unused adrenalin. This leads to anxiety, chronic stress, racing thoughts, and fatigue. Since most diseases start with stress, it’s a nasty downward spiral.
Transformative Breathing is the BIG secret to getting your share of the universal energy supply. It’s a therapeutic process that improves your breathing capacity so your cells can feast and truly be abundant. It also clears out pent up emotions that were stifled along with the tears. And ultimately it restores your ability to process and express emotions in a way that spirals upward… into joy.
Let’s take a look at the exhale now. In addition to feeding our cells with oxygen, proper breathing can remove up to 70% of the waste the body produces! Wow! That means that just by breathing properly and fully, we can dump twice as much waste as we can via sweating, urination and defecation all combined!
Maybe this explains a bit about why Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D., says, “Improper breathing is a common cause of ill health. If I had to limit my advice on healthier living to just one tip, it would be simply to learn how to breathe correctly. There's no single more powerful - nor more simple - daily practice to further your health and well-being than breathwork.”
Imagine how it would feel if you could automatically breathe deeply and relax in the face of the same challenges that now stress you out. Your brain would have all the oxygen it needs to process and respond to what’s going on. Your body would have the energy reserves to deal with the situation calmly and intelligently.
Soon, we are free from the tyranny of those energy-sapping habits of thought and behavior that can ruin our days, wear down our bodies and sabotage our goals. Instead, we can breathe fully and claim the energy to focus on whatever inspires us. Or whatever we aspire to!
Oh, and just for the record, deep breathing does contribute to better sex too. Think about it.
It ultimately comes down to respiration... The latin word for "breath is “espiritus”. Maybe this explains something about my other favorite quote from Dr. Weil…
“Breath is the movement of Spirit in the Body.”
