Why is Change So Difficult for Us

Why is change so difficult for some of us? For me, it’s usually fear of the unknown or feeling safe with the status quo. For others, it might be feeling comfortable with the familiar or being satisfied with who they are. The reality is we are constantly changing for better or worse.
The real question for me is ”who am I to be?” For the last twenty years I have wrestled with that question and struggled to find the answer. Who I am to be changed dramatically for me after a major crisis that happened in 1997.
On the morning of September 5th, 1997 (which happened to be the day of my 5th wedding anniversary) I learned my father was rushed to the hospital. I remember calling the emergency room to find out his status. The nurse I spoke with asked who I was and where I lived. Apparently, I lived far enough away so she told me the situation over the phone. I thanked the nurse for the information, hung up the phone and immediately went into shock. My father had passed away from a heart attack. He was only 65 years old at the time. I began to cry uncontrollably. I was 36 years old and my life had shattered.
To make a long story short, in the following months I separated from my wife, lost my job, sold my house and was in debt. My negative net worth had equaled my own self-worth. I fell into a deep long depression. I share this story to let you know our life can change in an instant, whether we we like it or not. How we react and respond to the change is what is more important? In that period of my life, I didn’t know who I was anymore, but was blessed with the opportunity to discover my purpose and who I am to be.
That’s all for now, make a small change today and in the long run it will make a huge difference. What change do you plan to make?
