If you're reading this article then you probably already have your own website. Depending on the nature of the website, you may have some world class, must read content up there already. In fact, you might even be publishing top quality content on a regular basis. If that's the case, why should you care about search engine optimisation?
Search engine optimisation is the process of making your website clearly visible and legible to search engines such as Google. Search engines have a very difficult job to do; every time you enter key words into the search box, they must trawl through literally millions of different pages to work out which ones are going to be most relevant to your query. Understanding this makes it even more impressive that many search engines are able to return ordered results in a matter of split seconds.
Unfortunately, even if your web site contains loads of great content that would be useful to someone searching certain key terms, search engines aren't always able to place your site in a logical position within the results for those terms. The reason for this is that whilst search engine algorithms are intelligent and becoming more intelligent by the day, they are not people. Search engines look for certain features in your content and code rather than understanding the content your website produces like a human being can.
Whilst search engines like Google often get it right (hence why so many people use them on a daily basis), they can also sometimes get it wrong. There is no use getting frustrated with a search engine for placing your web page towards the bottom of the pile of results. You would be far better off designing your site in such a way that Google will automatically recognise your web site as having a strong link to the particular key terms you are competing for.
This is where search engine optimisation comes in. Search engine services hide the specifics of the algorithms they use to prevent unsavoury web sites from taking advantage of the way they operate. This way they can offer the user a better service than they could otherwise. Nevertheless many legitimate people and businesses have an interest in unraveling the complexities of the algorithm so they can ensure their web sites are properly placed. Whilst these algorithms are too intelligent to 'fool' - Google can increasingly tell whether or not the content on your web site is relevant and of a high quality - people who have studied them are able to ensure that the quality, relevant content they create is recognised by the search engines as such.
Onlookers often misunderstand the relationship between search engine optimisation businesses and search engine operators as one of opposition, when in fact they are both working hard to ensure that the internet remains a useful resource for people everywhere.
