For a long time now, the internet has been an extremely competitive place – it is full to the brim with hundreds and thousands of websites that are all fighting over those top few positions. This is why search engine optimisation (SEO) is so important, as it involves putting strategies in place that improve your organic ranking on the more popular search engines. This, in turn, hopefully draws in the traffic you are after. But why does SEO have to be an ongoing process? Why can’t we just do it once and get results that way?

It is highly likely that, at any given time, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of websites out there that are extremely similar to your own; they provide the same sorts of services or products and to the same audience. Using SEO will help you to stand out from your competitors because you are a) regularly adding new content and b) promoting your site and garnering inbound links. It is important to keep in mind, however, that many of your competitors are also using SEO. - Search engines change
The various search engines that we use to search for information, products and services are also known to occasionally change their algorithms. This means that the SEO strategy you were using three months ago may now be completely redundant. Some of the techniques that you were using may also be moved into the black hat SEO category, meaning that they are considered unethical. This can lead to all sorts of problems for your ranking. - Techniques change
Every day, experts are coming up with new and improved ways for helping their client’s websites to rank better. If you aren’t constantly updating your own SEO strategy, it is likely that you will quickly find yourself left behind as those websites who utilize the most up to date techniques sore ahead. As mentioned above, you might also find that some of your SEO strategies are now considered unethical, which will serve a severe blow to your ranking.
The information provided in the above three points should make it more than clear why SEO is an ongoing process and not something that you can simply undertake once and expect to work for any amount of time. Essentially, if you want to stand a chance at doing better than your competitors and of keeping whatever ranking you do manage to generate, you need to ensure that people are constantly working on your SEO strategy.
