Streetwear is a matter which has been at the top of the world since 2016. With brands like Supreme becoming icons of both style and creativity and traditionally "classy ones" like Gucci and Louis Vuitton heavily investing in the matter, analyzing why the world of streetwear is still so popular is kind of mandatory to better understand this still extremely powerful trend. Streetwear is booming, with brands from Supreme and Off-White taking their cue from the sidewalks and becoming front and centre in the fashion industry, where more traditional trends are slowly falling out of touch. Street and urban wear are so ubiquitous that the names don’t really do them justice these days. No longer are the trends reserved for skaters who are oblivious to fashion - streetwear is a phenomenon in menswear and is a mixture of mainstream fashion and haute couture - depending on the tag attached. Let's dissect the brands, the icons and everything that makes streetwear what it is today. The Supreme Effect Supreme is possibly "the brand" when it comes to streetwear, after their "BOGO" phenomenon. The New York-born and raised brand are, in fact, the biggest one within this sector: with over 2 million pieces sold in the last couple of years, the combination of urban streetwear, designer styling, and skatewear has developed its roots within the foundation of streetwear, changing the whole matter thoroughly and making mens urban clothing what it is today. Virgil Abloh If you're a streetwear fanatic, or just interested in the topic, then you've probably encountered Virgil Abloh's name recently. Head of OFF-White and recently nominated Louis Vuitton's creative director, Virgil started his career as Kanye West's assistant, after they've finished an internship together at Fendi. Today, Virgil Abloh is yet again another non-fashion design trained figure who becomes an icon of style. “New” Ivy League Streetwear is a trend which was first identified in the 90s, and we all know that the 90s trends are making a comeback. Non more so than preppy fashion, which has features hailing right back to their 90s heyday, from traditional materials to loud logos and colourful graphics. No matter what you call it, trad, prep or ivy league, it almost always comes back into fashion. Although originally born on American college campuses and country clubs, the trend has morphed into a staple of streetwear. Colour instantly makes this trend all the more youthful, with bright reds, whites and blues often falling onto moodier colours, such as maroon, forest green, navy blue and plum. The "Asian" Market Brands like Comme Des Garcons and BAPE have shaken the streetwear market in the past couple of years, with collaborations like Nike, Adidas and Supreme (once again). Nigo and other creative designers and music personalities in Japan, China and Korea have been approached by big western brands for their design sense in terms of streetwear, confirmation of the fact that streetwear has definitely moved towards the "Asian" approach. The Future Of Streetwear Streetwear will still very likely remain the biggest trend within the fashion market in the next couple of years. In the recent fashion week, it has been stated that boutiques with a dedicated streetwear line were the ones who achieved the biggest success, deeply confirming the fact that we'll see these shapes in the market at least until 2025, hopefully with many more designers and small independent brands emerging.
