The prime directive of a company is to make money. This can be done in countless ways, and many of them aren’t some crude, heartless drive for cash. But when money is owed to you and it is not forthcoming, it goes directly against the company’s raison d’etre. The reason for why the money isn’t coming has no bearing on your aggravation, yet as a company, you are not in the business of retrieving money. While there is no legally or morally justifiable reason why you find yourself in your current pickle, you are in it nonetheless. The thing to do takes perspective, and it may seem hard or counter-intuitive, but you must hire someone else who specializes in these matters to retrieve it. Here are a couple of reasons why.
If you go after the party who owes you money yourself, you don’t really have any new force behind you to boss him into it. While you have a legal agreement, he has already shirked his responsibilities and left you in the cold. What’s changed? You can ask the same question over and over, and hope that he has a different response—that one day the withholding party feels suddenly and uncharacteristically generous and decides to do the right thing and pay you. But don’t hold your breath.
Collection agencies specialize in particularly this situation, and a good one is nationally contracted, so when they knock on the door and ask for money, there’s a new reason why the withholding party will actually change his mind, and payment will be forthcoming.
The odds are you have never had to do this sort of work before, and you have no experience whatsoever. Hiring a company with a proven track record in this field is essential. The reality of the situation may be hard to swallow: you need to pay a collection agency money because money that is owed to you is failing to turn itself over into your possession. This is why perspective is needed. In the big picture, the thing to do is cut your losses and understand that the choice is between not getting any money at all, or getting nearly all of it back. Framed this way, the decision is a no-brainer, and it’s evident right away that hiring a collection agency is the proper decision.
It very well may not be easy to be calm and calculating while this aggravating situation is foremost on your mind, but that’s just the reason you shouldn’t be left to resolve it. Stressing out over what you can do personally may not the best course of action. Get it out of your mind and off your hands, and allow the best in the business to correct one of the problems of your business. They will get you back on the right track soon. Meanwhile, you’ll be able to return your concentration onto the business you know best. And it all happens by allowing the collection agency do what they do best—collect.
