More and more patients are packing up their bags and traveling to foreign countries for medical treatments. Whether they are looking for cosmetic procedures, restorative dentistry or major medical procedures such as bypass surgery they are receiving the treatment abroad. Patients are turning to medical travel as an alternative to receiving the medical treatment in their home country. The type of treatments offered varies just as much as the travelers do. Patients are choosing medical tourism for several reasons including affordability, accessibility and high quality care. As patients consider their options in the overpriced U.S. healthcare system, they will eventually seek alternatives to the expensive treatments. Medical tourism provides patients with the alternative they have been looking for. It provides new choices ranging from dental care and cosmetic procedures as well as some of the costly major medical procedures including heart surgery and hip replacement surgery. Patients can receive the same high-quality care at a fraction of the price. Patients that take the time to learn about these alternatives and become educated about medical treatments overseas are finding affordable, high quality medical care by board certified surgeons. Additionally many of the options abroad are American-accredited. Those unwilling to do the research on medical treatments abroad may find themselves left in an expensive healthcare system with a limited number of choices. Another reason medical travel is a growing trend is because of the treatments that are inaccessible or are not offered in the United States. Some individuals are on a wait list to receive treatment. Patients that find themselves in this type of situation are suffering in pain while waiting for their turn in line. A way to speed up the process and receive the necessary medical procedure is to travel abroad for the medical care. Medical tourism is helping patients receive high quality medical treatments and improving their quality of life. Other procedures are not yet offered or are still in the experimental stage in the U.S. Each country has different laws and regulations when it comes to healthcare. Patients looking to receive a treatment that is not offered in the U.S. can get access to that treatment by traveling abroad. The most attractive benefit to traveling overseas for medical care is the cost savings. Patients can save anywhere between 50% and 80% on their medical procedure. The cost savings depend on the country they receive the treatment in and the type of procedure. Individuals who otherwise would not have been able to afford the treatment can know receive the care they deserve without hurting their bank account. Both uninsured and insured individuals are turning to medical travel. For insured individuals they are finding it is cheaper to pay for the whole treatment in another country rather than pay the portion that their insurance does not cover. Medical tourism is meeting patients’ high standards for quality care as well as their medical and financial needs. The more patients get educated about traveling abroad for medical procedures the more we will see a growth in the medical travel industry.
