Why Self Protection Should Be The New Self Defence

You may be asking yourself the question about what exactly is the fundamental difference between self defence and self protection and at first glance it may seem that the only real distinction is semantics. One of the founding members of the British Combat Association, Geoff Thompson, describes in one paragraph just how the two are more than just similar meaning nouns. Mr. Thompson tells the story of how one of his female students fails to understand the difference between the two concepts. I baby sit for a friend twice a week. In the evening I take the short cut home and walk through the local park. It always scares me but now that I have done a self defence course I feel so much safer when I take the short cut through the park. If she had been taught properly she would no longer be taking the short cut through the park. What we have here is essentially the difference between self defence and self protection put into a nutshell, one encourages the student to continue to take risks whilst the other utilises threat awareness coupled with threat avoidance. The most difficult part about adopting and using self protection over self defence is the need for a student to understand the main concept of reading any given situation and realising that said situation is potentially hazardous and here is the rub, they must walk away. You may be thinking to yourself that walking away from a dangerous situation is the easy part and that I have just stated the glaringly obvious but have I? You have no iea how much your ego will play a part in your decisions. It is possible that you have read that last sentence and thought to yourself that walking away from a potential conflict would be the easy part but I can assure it is not as clear cut as that, just wait until your ego kicks in. This is a simple example taken from a scenario that I know I have faced and I am pretty sure everyone else who is reading this article has an unpleasant experience of from somewhere in their past. Sitting in a pub or club and you look up and notice that you are on the receiving end of an unwarranted hostile and disconcerting look from another patron. Now this is the big question that self protection asks of you; would you or more importantly could you put down your drink and move on to another pub or club? If you answered no and I am pretty damn sure most of you reading this will have refused to leave and do so under the proviso of asking the question; why the hell should I have to leave when it is someone else who is looking to cause trouble? The answer to that question has many possible outcomes but predominately we are looking at an aggressor who is passively projecting a challenge towards you. The reason for them to do so can be manifold and range from them having complex social, mental or domestic issues to the simplicity of being naturally aggressive. If we put all of this to one side and just look at the facts then what we have is someone that you do not know personally, that you are unaware of their history or circumstances who is willing to be passively aggressive towards you. And let us not forget the environment that you are in, so it would be safe to say that they have indulged in alcohol and possibly drugs, meaning that their inhibitions have been lowered significantly. Even after reading all of this and that you still feel that staying in that situation is the right thing to do, then I am afraid to say that you have failed to grasp the concept of good self protection and it is entirely possible that your ego is making your decisions and not the commonsense part of your brain. I did mention earlier that walking away from a potentially dangerous situation was the way to go but you suddenly realise that it is so much more difficult than it first appears. As a matter of fact it is quite possibly one of the hardest things for you to do. It is my sincerest hope that you are seeing self protection as a viable lifestyle change but for those of you are still not convinced then I can assure that the world is full of people who wish they had just walked away from the situations that have left them physically and mentally scarred. It is not only these people that are involved, let us not forget that the law courts are also full of people who felt justified in the self defence actions but are now wishing or had wished that they had just walked away from the circumstances that has lead them to be in the dock. Of course it is possible and it does happen, that they are acquitted based on their claims of self defence but ask yourself this; is it really something that any sane person would want to risk their health, their family, their livelihood or possibly their lives over?Of course it is entirely feasible that someone facing such charges will be acquitted but be honest with yourself, are you really willing to take such a chance and bear in mind that should you be convicted that it does not just affect you but those that are close to you, be it family or friends? The art of self protection is about feeling good about actively avoiding this type of confrontation, it is not about mentally beating yourself up because you know some ninja moves that were taught to you by a self defence expert and you failed to tie this aggressor into a pretzel for giving you a dirty look. This article is intended for all but it is relevant and applicable to those who work as a private investigator, an industry that benefits greatly from having the ability to read a given situation early and giving the operative every chance to avoid an embarrassing confrontation with someone that they may have under surveillance.
