Conducting long term care research can lead to the actual purchase of a long term care insurance (LTCI) policy which is designed to cover your expenses in a nursing home and even at home. That is the case if the purpose of your research is to secure your future but if it is only to prove yourself right and the experts wrong, chances are you’ll never get your hands on a balanced plan. Before planning your long term care (LTC) you have to understand what it is first and who normally requires this type of service. It is defined as an array of services which are provided to meet an individual’s medical and non-medical needs. Medical care is given to elderly folks who have acquired a chronic illness, end-stage cancer, or Alzheimer’s among others, or to disabled individuals. Sickness can hinder people from functioning normally so if an individual is no longer capable of functioning without assistance from an extra pair of hands due to a serious health disorder, he qualifies for LTC. Non-medical or custodial care, on the other hand, pertains to LTC services provided to the elderly or disabled patients who are not sick but need assistance in his activities of daily living (ADL) such as eating, bathing, dressing, use of toilet, continence, and transferring. Medical care is usually provided in institutional LTC facilities such as nursing homes as this usually requires 24-hour monitoring. There are some people, however, that prefer to receive medical care at home which is not discouraged at all especially if the patient has had his home modified to suit the aging-in-place experience. Custodial care, on the other hand, can be acquired in the confines of one’s home, in an assisted living facility or in a continuing-care retirement community. Long Term Care Research After studying the different types of care that you may receive someday, take time to study the different kinds of care providers. In the past, people think of nurses at the mention of long term care. Nowadays, there are different categories of care providers apart from skilled nurses. One is called unskilled caregiver and she is the opposite of skilled nurses. Unskilled caregivers do not have to master or know the nature of the work of a nurse because they won’t be handling people with serious maladies. Their main task is to assist old people who are too weak to perform the simplest of ADLs as a result of old age. When researching about long term care it is not enough to just familiarize yourself with the technical aspects of the subject. More importantly, you have to be able to identify which LTC setting and caregiver will be appropriate for your health care needs 20 or 20 years from now. Long term care research may take time and a lot of patience but it is better to go through this process than to invest your hard earned money on an LTC plan which you will never get to use.
