Most people look forward to their dental checkups. After all, these visits to the dentists, along with proper oral hygiene practices, are the best way of taking care of one’s oral health. And when they need to make their smiles look better, they can always drop by the office of a good cosmetic dentist and get the necessary procedure done. Some people, however, are deathly afraid of having a dental professional check them out. Even when they have dental issues that obviously require the attention of a dentist, they will do or say anything to avoid making that appointment. This kind of fear can be dangerous as delaying dental treatment can only make their problems worse with each passing day. Perhaps it’s the pain generally associated with dental procedures that stop most people from visiting a dentist’s office. While it’s true that there are dental procedures like root canals that can get really painful, most of the things dentists do don’t hurt at all. So why are so many people still terrified of dentist visits? Here are some likely reasons. The fear of pain Pain is bad, but the fear of pain can be even worse, especially when the procedure isn’t likely to hurt a patient in any way. The anticipation of possible pain from an injection or a drill can send a person into a panic. Dental phobia is a universal phenomenon, and it’s said to be a more serious condition than anxiety. Some cases of dental phobia may even require psychiatric consultation. A traumatic experience There are, indeed, painful dental procedures. Root canals are often at the top of the list, along with crowns and dental implants. It’s possible a person might have gone through one in the past and is so traumatized by it that he or she has sworn off any dental visits in the future. However, it’s also likely that their trauma comes from having had a dentist with poor, even bad, bedside manners. Some dentists may even be abrasive, or even abusive enough to make them want to steer clear of having any contact with dentists forever. Self-consciousness Some people are too self-conscious to feel comfortable when a dentist, often a stranger to them, takes a very close look at their mouth. There are also people who feel a lot of discomfort when other people’s faces are too close to theirs, which is often the case with dental professionals. Calming anxious patients There is no other person better qualified to calm patients who are experiencing dental anxiety than the dentist himself. The dentist can start by making his or her office as relaxing as possible. Setting the thermostat to a pleasant temperature and placing comfortable chairs in the waiting room can help a patient relax. Playing soothing music does wonders as well. A fish tank or a small waterfall will work, too. Most importantly, a friendly demeanor from the entire staff goes a long way in calming anxious patients.
