For many years, we have been hearing about “Laser liposuction procedures” “ultrasound” liposuction treatment, “Smart” liposuction treatment, and now “Water assisted Laser Liposuction”! Any smart marketer could think up these: that their procedure was “smart, advanced, and of course "modern” To those of us who have been doing this for several years, it’s just another bad joke. Each one of these procedures involve a $100.000 plus machine. None of them has ever been proven safer, more efficient or produce far better recoveries than experienced plastic surgeons using “tumescent” technique.
Here’s what “tumescent technique” is and exactly how it developed. Initially, fat was suctioned that has a sort of open-tipped instrument and removed. The loss of blood with this was too high, so in 1987 the first clinical paper about liposuction using large volumes of local anaesthetic was published. Ever since then the procedure was refined and standardized, and now generally just a little of blood is lost with the modern day tumescent liposuction. Plastic surgeons performing variations of liposuction surgeies need to inform potential clients about the merits of the prescribed liposuction procedure. And then present some sort of scientific and or result qualifications that they have directly contributed or performed.
The claim for the “new” technologies is: less hemorrhaging, less pain, less recovery, and far better results. No study has ever proven this! In clinical science, the way in which we try and find out if medicines or technique works involves taking groups of patients and comparing them with other groups who receive another kind of drug or treatment. Such studies, if performed properly, might help us understand if treatments really work or are simply fancy sugar pills or “placebos”. Laser liposuction, vaser, water jet, or “smart” liposuction has never been shown to work any far better than our tumescent liposuction, with which we now have so much experience. In fact, many of these techniques are most often riskier or at the minimum produce scarring in the fat. This might make correction associated with a problems or complications more challenging.
The laws from the state of California say that advertising a medical or medical method is superior is prohibited unless it’s really true which enables it to be demonstrated scientifically. Anyone who says water jet liposuction treatment, laser liposuction techniques, or “smart” liposuction is superior to ordinary liposuction is breaking the law. Complaints may be forwarded to the Healthcare Board of California and the Board will take proper action against the offender.
The water jet liposuction techniques, particularly has had a great deal of advertising hype, both in the conferences along with their advertising. Clinical techniques are usually taught by physicians and cosmetic surgeons free or at minimal cost. This technique, alternatively has had an expensive training fee attached, in an attempt to profit not only from the patients but from the physicians... The people who have been promoting this “technology” have been a sort of standing joke at the medical meetings. Buyer beware, caution. There’s no replacement for experience and this technology has been in existence only a year or two, and anyone who claims they are able to buy a machine and become an expert through the use of the technology rather than medical experience is not as a cosmetic surgeon of choice giving justice to their clientele.
