You've heard that an apple a day can keep the doctor away . . . But is that true anymore? These days, the beautiful, whole fruit has been tossed to the side. And the complex nutrition in the apple has been reduced, extracted and isolated, put into pills and capsules. rnInstead of turning to whole foods to get their nutritional benefits, more and more we’ve turned to isolated nutrients in supplement form. And as nutritionists, researchers and health experts are discovering, it’s just not the same. Americans are buying more vitamins and supplements. But many of our chronic diseases and health concerns are not going away. Why? Because isolated nutrients don’t do the same work that whole food and whole food supplements - like eleuthero and chlorella tablets - do. rnWhole food provides real healing power that goes far beyond isolated compounds. And whole food supplements – made from concentrated whole foods – contain the same complex mix of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, co-factors, trace minerals, unique phytonutrients, special fats and more – that you’d find in the original food. It’s the difference between the music created by a full orchestra and that of one violin. Whole food supplements can support your health in ways isolated nutrients can never do. How A Whole Apple Does More Than It's Parts Going back to the apple, here’s an example: Researchers tested the antioxidant power of apples with their skins, apples without skins and isolated vitamin C which is found in apples. One hundred grams of the apple with skin provided the equivalent of 83 trolox of antioxidant power. The apple without skin offered only 46 trolox. And the straight vitamin C? Less than 1. When tested against human colon and hepatic cancer lines, the apple with skin trumped both the apple without skin and the vitamin C easily.[1] Why? Several reasons . . . There are a few reasons you’ll get more from whole food supplements than from isolated compounds: Whole Food Supplement Nutrition Adds Up The apple with skin may not have much more vitamin C than the C alone. But it has perhaps dozens of other antioxidants in it that add up to super antioxidant power. Whole foods may not provide rich supplies of one specific nutrient. But that may not matter because the various antioxidants housed in the fruit may add up to more fighting power. Whole Food Supplements Contain Synergistic Nutrition Neither lycopene nor vitamin E do much to cancer cells on their own. But when put together – voila! – they can reduce the growth of cancer cells by 73%![2] This is a great example of synergy. Synergy essentially means that 1 + 1 makes more than 2. Synergy means 1 + 1 = 4 or 5 or 6! In other words, instead of just adding up, certain combinations of nutrients offer exponentially much larger health benefits than they would on their own. rnSomehow the two different compounds bring out the best in each other, “optimizing the mechanisms” of each other when combined. Whole Food Supplements Give You Balanced Nutrition A navel orange contains a whopping 23 grams of sugar! Wow – that’s a lot of sugar. In fact it’s the same amount of sugar in 6 Oreo cookies. Does that surprise you? You probably thought fruit was a good alternative to eating cookies. Well, there’s more to this story . . . Fruit not only has sugar, it has lots of fiber. The fiber in fruits slows down your body’s absorption of the fruit’s sugars. Thanks to fiber, your body can access the energizing sweetness of fruits without overwhelming the bloodstream with sugar. Better yet, in addition to fiber, fruit contributes phytonutrients to the mix. These phytonutrients can help the body in a number of ways. But most noticeably, in this instance, the antioxidants in fruit can help clean up some of the free radicals released when the sugar in fruits is metabolized as fuel. rnTo sum it up, the fiber and phytonutrients in fruit balances out the potential damaging effects of the sugar in fruits.
