Does the sound of a dentist's drill make your toes curl? Do you avoid receiving dental care until you are in so much pain you can't take it any more? Does your fear of the dentist cause you to cancel cleaning appointments? rnIf you answered yes to these questions, sedation dentistry might be right for you. Dental Fears and Anxiety Many patients experience anxiety associated with going to the dentist. Most people are able to overcome this fear or simply push through the anxiety to complete what needs to get done. Other patients are unable to cope with the fear. For some patients, sedation is the only option when it comes to visiting the dentist. Dentist colorado springs is offering cheap Sedation Dentistry treatments. This is because their fears are so overwhelming and debilitating that they truly cannot make themselves go to a dental appointment. Where Does Dental Anxiety Come From? Dental anxiety often happens after a traumatic dental visit. Many years ago, dental procedures were more painful than they are today. Dentists were also less able to cope with young patients. You may have visited the dentist as a child and felt unsafe, scared and helpless. That feeling can cause you to have dental anxiety to this day. rnMaybe you had a specific dental experience that was very painful or was botched by an incompetent dentist. This can also cause feelings of fear and anxiety. rnA few patients may experience panic attacks at a dentist office. If you have panic attacks, you may not be able to make it through a dental visit on your own. How Can You Cope With Dental Anxiety? There are several different ways to handle your fear of the dentist. One way is to find a dentist who specializes in anxious patients and will patiently explain procedures to you and be understanding about your fears. rnYou can also try relaxation techniques at the dentist's office. These might include deep breathing, meditation or smelling essential oils. You can also distract yourself with music. If none of these solutions work for you, it might be time to consider sedation. Types of Sedation Being sedated during your dental appointment does not necessarily mean that you will be knocked out. In fact there are several choices when it comes to sedation, and some are milder than others. Nitrous Oxide You might know nitrous oxide as laughing gas. This type of sedation puts you in a relaxed state to help relieve anxiety. The gas is breathed in through a device that fits over your nose. You inhale the nitrous for a few minutes before your dental work begins and during the procedure. The sedation is completely reversible. You are back to your normal self within a few minutes of breathing regular air. Some dentists will not use nitrous oxide for a simple cleaning, but only for more extensive procedures. Talk to your dentist about your options. Oral Sedatives Your dentist can prescribe oral medication to help you relax before your dental appointment. Sometimes the medication is taken the morning of the procedure, and sometimes it is taken the night before. Follow your dentist's instructions completely when you are using this type of sedation. If you use oral sedation for your dental appointment, you will not be able to drive yourself to and from your visit. rnIV SedationrnThose who are extremely nervous may opt to be sedated by an IV. This is medication that goes into your body through a needle inserted directly into a vein. It puts you in a sleepy state that is sometimes referred to as twilight. This type of sedation is only used when necessary because the patient has a limited ability to respond to the dentist's questions and instructions. You will remain awake during IV sedation, but you may not remember the experience. Sedation Dentistry At A Price You Can't Beat Sedation is not usually covered by dental insurance, so you should plan in advance for the extra cost. Talk to your dental team about the price of each type of sedation and what your options are. Your dentist may be able to offer you a discount. If you are considering sedation dentistry, the first step is to speak to a dentist about the details. Schedule an appointment with a dentist who offers sedation to discuss your options and find out if sedation is right for you.
