Living without light is very difficult. The sun is our main source of light and energy during the day but at night we rely on light bulbs for light. Doing so has allows us to carry out our normal activities 24 hours a day. Today, America has grown to such an extent that if the power is shut off for only 15 or 30 minutes, the whole production of America will be reduced by 10%. It would set back the entire nation, showing just how much we depend on light and power these days. Energy from nonrenewable resources, used in excess, is not good for the environment and will quickly diminish over time. We need energy efficient light bulbs that save energy allowing us to use the same amount in the future. Also, by using energy efficient bulbs we can also reduce energy expenses.

Traditional bulbs, called incandescent bulbs, consume more energy to produce light. Using them to light your house will waste a lot of energy. As humans, we started our pioneer to artificial light through incandescent lights but we cannot continue to use them forever. We have become complacent with our use of these energy hogs. Luckily there are some advances in lighting technology lately to replace this antiquated technology. Incandescent light bulbs consume more energy and produce both heat and light. The undesired heat generated is where the energy is being unnecessarily wasted. As consumers we end up paying large sums of money for the wasted energy. In general if we prevent the use of incandescent light bulbs we can save a minimum of $50 a year. If every household in America would replace just a few of their old incandescent lights, we can save millions of dollars in wasted energy.

Compact Fluorescent Lights, also known as CFL bulbs, are a good energy saver compared to the incandescent bulb. A 14-Watt CFL light bulb is equivalent to a 60-Watt incandescent light bulb. While the energy savings are good with CFL bulbs there are some tradeoffs to using them. Generally CFL bulbs will emit less heat and uses more of the energy flow to give light. There will be a lot less energy waste and the CFL light bulbs typically have a good life span. Under normal use, CFL bulbs will last 8,000 to 12,000 hours. CFL bulbs cost more than incandescent bulbs but the upfront expenses are paid back over time by not paying for the wasted energy.

Light Emitting Diodes, also known as LED bulbs, are a very good energy saver compared to all the other technologies. In the beginning, LED bulbs were used as pen lights but today we can find many products suitable for household use. Their lifespan is very long, typically over 20,000 hours. Best of all, they use only 70 - 80% of the energy a traditional incandescent bulb uses. The initial cost for these LED bulbs is high but they will pay back your investment within a few months. They can be used as home lighting which will consume much less energy compared to other technologies. Choose the best bulb for your application to save the most money and energy.
